Vw polo 2006 1.2 BMD engine, had burnt out exhaust valves and was down on compression on cylinder 1 engine light on and running bad(running only on two cylinders really). Head was skimmed and had new valves put in. The car also got a new timing chain kit including tensioner and guides. Ever since the engine has been reassembled it will not run. It will start with the accelerator but will cut out straight away, but will stay running if u keep a rev on it but as soon as u let off the engine will cut out and smoke can be seen rising from the engine bay. Also exhaust manifold is hot.

Anybody know what the problem, car was starting and running before so can't understand what could be wrong?

Double check you aren't a tooth out with the timing chain. Do a compression test as well, just to be certain all valves are closing properly.

I have taken off the timing cover and all looks fine. The timing slots on the camshaft and flywheel match up, could it be out a tooth and still match? I'll do a compression test and see what that tells me.
    Thanks for the reply.
