Outbound rescheduled, do I have to accept my holiday being shortened?

    Flew today from Stockholm to Dublin with missus and kids only to be diverted to Manchester. After hours on the tarmac another attempt was to be made to go to Dublin. That was aborted and we were returned to Stockholm. What a day.

    I can be rebooked to travel on Friday.... but as our trip was only a week if we are to return on the planned return flight then its not really worth bothering as the trip would be so short.

    With the stress of the day it didn’t occur to ask questions around this and customer service is closed. Anyone know if I am entitled to completely rebook the trip to another set of dates or if I if I take the seats on Friday can I push the return leg out?

    You didn't mention the airline so you'll have to check their website or e-mail or phone their customer service.

    Depending on the level of travel insurance you have, you may be able to abandon the entire holiday and claim back all non-refundable expenses.

    Bit of a knobbish response, aren't ya great. I am asking about coverage under EU regulations, if anyone more helpful has a view that would be appreciated.

    Is the airline obliged to pay compensation where the cancellation is beyond the control of the airline?
    Article 5.3 provides that the air carrier shall not be obliged to pay compensation if it can prove that the cancellation is caused by extraordinary circumstances which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. The Regulation gives the following examples of extraordinary circumstances: political instability; bad weather; security risks; unexpected flight safety shortcomings; strikes that affect the operation of an air carrier and air traffic management decisions.

    Extreme weather and an Air Traffic Control restriction falls into the extraordinary circumstances, so EU Regulations don't cover you

    You could just get a refund on your flight as per policy with SAS

    They do say though:
    Additional costs can include food expenses and hotel accommodation where applicable. For other costs, we recommend that you contact your insurance provider for possible reimbursement.

    Might be worth it in the future to think about a travel insurance policy, for the sake of 70 - 100 euros a year it's piece of mind, I certainly wouldn't do without it.

    It is very very likely that your flight on Friday will be cancelled too. Talk to the airline then

    That's a definite now. Dublin airport closed until 4am on Saturday morning
