Apparently one of opposition TDs accused the government of acting like Joseph Goebbels regarding the publicity surrounding the Ireland 2040 scheme

Simon Harris, a senior government minister, then starts complaining that this was anti-semetic at which point the Dail was suspended

If anything this would be anti-Nazi, can someone please explain how any sane person could possibility see this as anti-Semitic

Perhaps, minister Harris should seriously consider if he is suitable for a life in front bench politics

my impression of Simon Harris is he has this very unpolitical tendency to give an honest answer to a question which by the seasoned politician might be a "ah sure look it/ talk about anything but what was asked" question.

I presume what he was getting at was that equating the advertorials controversy with Nazism implicitly trivialised the murder and suffering of Jews in the Holocaust.

Regarding Itssoeasy's comment, the Minister is very good at answering questions in a competent way that shows he is in charge of his brief, but honesty wouldn't be the word I would use. He says whatever is most politically expedient depending on the way the wind is blowing. He is young yet has risen to Cabinet rank without trace, and has done this through unstinting adherence to the party line, whatever it is. He's a man who knows what side his bread is buttered on.

    Very silly OP.

Trivialising the Holocaust and associated Nazism is seen as anti-Semitic.

Comparing an ad campaign promoting the most important planning document in Ireland to Goebbels is the sort of thing that trivialises the holocaust. Over the top response from Harris but an idiotic statement from whichever gob****e in the opposition brought up Goebbels.

Joseph Goebbels was considered a master of propaganda, or at least he is remembered mainly for being a propagandist.

That in itself has nothing to do with jews or the holocaust. In fact, Harris dragging the holocaust into it can be considered a cynical attempt to use that tragedy to silence the opposition TD who was complaining about this current example of govt. propaganda.

Harris has to be one of the most useless individuals ever to darken the doors of DE . He is an expert in wringing his hands , looking concerned with furrowed brows whilst spouting " Yes , we must look into that " . Still in" Political Nappies" , as George Hook said.

Perhaps by you, but 99.99999% of people remember Goebbels as a Nazi first and a propagandist second, and closely associated with the Holocaust. For example, wikipedia opens with:

Paul Joseph Goebbels was a German Nazi politician and Reich Minister of Propaganda of Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945. He was one of Adolf Hitler's close associates and most devoted followers, and was known for his skills in public speaking and his deep, virulent antisemitism, which was evident in his publicly voiced views. He advocated progressively harsher discrimination, including the extermination of the Jews in the Holocaust.

Harris should be ashamed using the Jewish plight under the Nazis to distract from FG waste.

If somebody compares bombings to the blitz is that anti-semetic? Nonsense and disgraceful.

Familiar FG tactic. Jump to the emotive if under pressure in the Dail. We would call it 'deflection' in this parish.

As with all ministers, he says what his advisors tell him to say.

Even Shatter said the remarks weren't anti-semitic.

Are you a FF supporter, OP? If so, you should know the name of the FF TD who started this non-event:D.
