Can anyone point me to the building regulation for external dwelling doors, specifically wooden doors. All I am finding is fire doors and non-dwelling regs.

    What type of regulations?

Not being smart but there are Standards for everything from insulation to paint.

    Start by looking at http://www.housing.gov.ie/housing/building-standards/tgd-part-d-materials-and-workmanship/Technical-guidance-documents

    Also part L covers u-values

It's part of a brief for my engineering course. The "guidelines" are vague. I am to build a scaled down external door (2:1). The brief includes submitting plans, cutting list, joint details etc. It also asks about building regulations and employment law in this area....that's where it gets vague.

Is this a normal front door?
Or a normal timber door that one would use to enter/exit a dwelling?

If so then Technical Guidance Document Part L will give guidance on the heat loss allowable etc

There’s also a security standard that it needs to withstand for burglary.
You may also consider people with disabilities and wheelchair users when thinking about your positioning of locking mechanisms and handles.

You must also consider part B (fire safety) if the door will be a final exit within a vertical fire escape route through a dwelling ie. no key locks internally, thimb locks only.

Look up part M of the building regulations. Front doors AFAIK have to be at least 900m wide and have a flat level area of 900×900 in front of them for wheelchair access.... IE no step up to them.

Thanks guys. As I said, the brief guidelines are very vague in sections and very much open to interpretation. My assumption is the front door is to be a door to a normal semi/detached dwelling.

The project door will be 400x1000, scaled down from a full size of 900x2250 (1:2.25). Thickness will be 40, so off scale.

It wouldn’t be the first time I have had to beat some clarification out of the tutors. It’s a crying shame it must be a scaled down version. A full size external door project would have been more useful. If anyone is looking for a door for a kids play house in a few months...drop me a pm :)

You won't be able to buy a miniature scale handle or lock that easily!!! What do your tutors propose for that?
