Any player not part of one the big data mining companies

    a question prompted by the acquisition of Ring by Amazon, I've a real hesitance about going down the connected home route due to my perception that the data is gathered by one of the big data mining companies, be that google, amazon, apple, etc.

    Apple doesn't actually do much data mining. They do most of the AI stuff on the device itself, rather then in the cloud. Unlike Google, they don't have an advertising division (they had for a while, but I think they sold it off) and they actually profit heavily from their devices and services.

    No company is perfect, but from what I've seen over the years, Apple are the one company who really takes user privacy very serious, going as far as refusing to unlock iPhones for the US government, etc.

    Google actually takes users privacy serious too, unlike what most people think, they don't actually share your data with anyone else, it is far too valuable to them, to be sharing it. However they definitely mine that data in the cloud to perfect their AI systems, etc.

    it's like that quip, if you're not paying then you're the product. I'd take more comfort from a company that is selling their products at price that they can profit from, rather than the one that relies on being able to manipulate your data for profit.
