    hi
my family got a bill from a solicitor for €338/hour (thats including vat at 23%) for carrying out work on my mothers estate.
    there was no will.

he has billed for 20 hours and 50 minutes work. which i would have no problem with

its just i think the rate is crazy.

its very difficult to find any information on this

does anybody know if this is normal or average?
would it be any good going to the taxing master?
has anybody any luck with that route?

    Thanks in advance

We had a €20k+ estate and our solicitor told us not to bother as legal costs would be too much. UK relatives were shocked.

Did you get a letter from the solicitor before you gave formal instructions to proceed with the work in which he set out an estimate of the likely costs ?

It is called a S.68 letter. Look at this information from the Law Society. link https://www.lawsociety.ie/Solicitors/Practising/Practice-Notes/The-Dos-And-Donts-Of-Section-68/#.Wpamr3mzLcs

    No didn't get that letter.
Thinking we'll have to take it to the taxing master.
Hope we aren't wasting our time though.

Adept professional advice is expensive but most people who have experience of going both ways will tell you it's the least expensive of the two options.

    What's the other option?
