Receiving payment while on Jobseekers Allowance

Hi. I'm hoping someone could please advise because I'm as confused as hell!!

OK, so I was made redundant effective the 31st of December and have been been receiving JSA. Thankfully, this has been relatively short term as I am now due to start a new job in early March. I received my P45 in early January and was paid redundancy as part of my December pay.

So, what’s the issue? My last position paid commission and this was done two months in arrears. So, at the end of January I received November’s commission and today I received December’s commission. I received a payslip for each of these and under tax/usc it shows ‘E’ which I assume is Emergency tax.

I just wanted to make sure that all this was correct or of if there is anything that I need to do? For example, when I start my new job next month, don’t I need to give them my P45? Because this is from the end of December, is this still valid? I don’t have a statement of tax credits or anything like that. Hopefully someone has been through a similar situation and can let me know if anything is wrong here.

    Thanks!!

Not an answer to your core question, but surely you've been receiving Jobseekers Benefit (which isn't means tested) rather than Jobseekers Allowance (which is)?

Because, if you have been receiving JA and haven't told the DSP about your income, then you need to clear up that situation asap!

I'm not really sure tbh, I'm not used to this stuff as I've never signed on before. I just assume it was JSA but you could be right.

What is confusing is that these are payments for work carried out last year but because they are two monts in arrears, I'm only getting them now. I have not been employed since Jan 1st and have been looking for a new job. I'd argue that the payments are income (well, for working now).

I did drop into the office last week to tell them but the guy didn't seem too interested and told me not to worry about it. Hopefully it's not just his opinion??

Well if he wasn't interested, that suggests that you're on JB, not JA, which is good!

I can only suggest that you contact your local revenue office regarding the commission and the emergency tax taken from you. Seeing as you received it in this tax year and it isn't included in your P45, you'll need to include it in this year's tax return.

I'm curious as to how your former employer will return the tax deducted from you to revenue; maybe you could ask them to give you a short letter outlining what happened and the amounts involved which you could send on to revenue, as you are due tax credits against that income for Jan and Feb when you weren't working.
