Is it safe to leave the power unit for a masthead amplifier switched on all the time, day and night? Same question for an aerial distributer box?

They are low power and are designed to be left on all the time. So, no, not dangerous if properly installed and earthed correctly.

generally yes, i have seen many that had been working for years although some of the power units outer housing had been discoloured by heat,
if possible locate the power unit where there may be a bit of air flow around it,
many power units and distribution amplifiers were fitted in attics and had been completely covered when extra insulation was fitted on top of them,
