Hi I have been in my house nearly a year and there is dirt in the well- this can be seen if you take off the top of the taps. A plumber mentioned that the well once dug should have been run out into a drain for a week to clear it out. This was not done- is there anything I can do now.

Is the Well lined.? I suspect that it isn't. It could be with the high level of rainfall in recent months the soil in many areas is holding an usually high volume of water in the ground. Consequently it may be causing some the Well Walls to collapse and falling into the Well. What you're experiencing is small particles of grit being lifted by the pump in the Water.
As a short term solution you could try lifting the Pump to a higher level in the Water.
Going forward you may need to get the Well lined and the Well flushed.

Thanks for that. That makes sense as one day after heavy rainfall the water smelt awful. I will ask the well driller re lining and flushing the well

It may not be a good time to reline and Flush for the same reason that you might do more damage with so much Water in the ground. I'd wait until Summer when there has been a lot of drying out of the ground.

As a short term fix depending on the Dept of the Well I'd lift the Pump up 20 or thirty Feet. or until it's pumping clean Water.
