I work with a private company who works nationally but I've been based in the same area for 7 years now...the company director that I deal with is nearing retirement...currently working on a contract that has 2 years to run...chances are that he will retire at the end and there's a good chance I will be moved around the country to various work sites or laid off...other compaines in the same line of work in the same part of the country dont pay the same rate im on now. I've been offered a job in the public sector but I'd be taking a 40% pay cut...however, I'd be permanently based in the same location.....and it's a job until I retire in the same line of work.

    Any thoughts anyone?

What age are you? Would you struggle to pay current bills or mortgage with a 40% drop?

Thanks for your thoughts folks.....it's a big pay cut...don't think we'd survive after that much...bit more thinking to do..

    Pros:

    Great work life balance
Earn days off for working over time
Leave on the minute you're meant to finish
    Lower stress levels
    Job security
    Flexi working hours

    Cons:
A lot harder to get promoted to a better pay scale than it used to be
Can be boring or frustrating if you're a conscientious worker
Bullying can be rife as its very hard to get fired

All of this plus the policies and the procedures and how much your manager values them can drive you to destruction!

Please disregard most of this post if you’re thinking of taking public sector job. I would take the opposite point of view on practically everything in the post.

I’m taking a guess that you’re an accountant or solicitor...

Although work/life balance options are thoroughly promoted in PS it can actually be very difficult to avail of them. Just because they’re there doesn’t mean you get them.

If you’re above HEO level you don’t get OT, you do not get flexi-time and you are expected to work extra hours in most roles. This is unpaid and you don’t get time in lieu. A lot of roles, especially at higher levels, have an expectation that you work well in excess of the time you’re meant to.

Don’t think you’ll be walking into a low stress job where you get every term and condition that’s advertised... you won’t. Many roles have low stress but you’d be surprised how different the PS is from how it’s perceived by Irish Independent readers.

There are loads of promotions going on at the moment so if there is a career path there you might get on it quick enough. There’s a reason there’s vacancies at the moment though and the 40% pay cut you’ll be taking is one of the main ones as are the T&Cs. If you’re under 30 then the pension will be good... but only if you do the full 40 years and there are no further changes to the pension (of course there will be). Our pensions more than pay for themselves... if they didn’t then there’d be an opt out but there isn’t. Far more money is received by way of pension levy and other mandatory pension payments we make than is paid out.

Bullying rates are quite low compared to other workplaces due to the policies in place and the way staff are educated on bullying through awareness and even sometimes presentations on bullying. There’s also great support offered to anyone who feels they’ve been bullied through the Employee Assistance Service
