P21 Balancing Statement - Is it possible for it to be wrong?

    Hi All,

I changed jobs mid January 2017 and my first 2 wage slips got hit with emergency tax so about 50% was taken from both of them.

Submitted for the P21 statement expecting to get this back but it says I underpaid by €43.

Contacted Revenue about it and spoke to 2 separate people advising them of the emergency tax at the start of the year. Both told me 2 different things.

One said if I overpaid I would get a lump sum with the P21 statement and since it says I didn't over pay I am not due anything back.

The other said that the tax credits would have been adjusted throughout the year and I probably recouped it in the remaining months of the year. My pay for 2018 months is the same as 2017 months so not sure this is the case.

Spoke to my accounts team and they say nothing they can do, they have submitted everything they need to and the correct tax has been applied to me so if I feel that there is something wrong I need to contact revenue.

So now I find myself in a position whereby I believe I overpaid due to being emergency taxed but the P21 statement says otherwise.

So is it possible for this to be wrong?

    Cheers

    They do get things wrong.
I got a p21 done a last year & they told me I underpaid €1700 & that my tax would be adjusted in the next year to recoup it. A few weeks later I submitted medical receipts & a new p21 was issued where I got everything back. The first time they never included my wife's allowance!
They also have me down for an incorrect amount of medical insurance relief. When I contacted them they insisted it was correct. I had to get a letter from payroll to send in with the correct details. Still waiting for them to respond to that.
If I remember correctly if you pay emergency tax your employer can ammend it after you go on the correct rate or leave as is for you to claim back the next year. Your payroll person should really be able to tell you.

This is really confusing. You implied they told you two different conflicting things, but reading your post it does not appear they did.

To me what they both said is fine, and they are both right. No issue here. You are not due anything.

Emergency tax is normally refunded through your wages once your employer receives an up to date cumulative tax credits cert from Revenue for you. Check your payslips after the first 2 and you should see that emergency tax being refunded to you.

There are tax calculators online which gives you a rough idea how much tax you should pay given your earnings. if you know all your tax credits the more accurate it will be.  Wont be exact but if you check your tax paid on your P60 for last year and the numbers are wildly different then you probably are entitled to something back.
