Is this the fan for the heat inside the cabin, or the fan in the engine bay?

If it is the fan inside the cabin then it could be a fuse, or it could be the blower motor itself or the blower motor resistor.
I'd start by checking the electrical things as you can do that yourself. Check your owner's manual for fuse diagram.

The cabin heater fan (which is the one I assume you mean) on a 320 beemer is surprisingly easy to replace - much easier than many other makes. If you are anyway DIY handy then you could do it in less than an hour yourself. If you get it done in a garage, then an hours labour should easily cover it, plus parts - you can buy the blower motor very cheaply on Ebay etc.

I am presuming its the fan inside the car - i am by no means gifted at this stuff - thanks for all the replies.

It's actually at the back of the engine bay, just under the centre of the windscreen.

What year and model is the car? e46? e90?

Is this the final stage or "hedgehog" resistor in the cabin blower?

I presume if it was rattling before it died, it's the blower motor itself.

If I'm not mistaken the blower motor is in the cabin then.
