What to do with 3+ hectares of wet land

My father has over 3 hectares of land along a river that doesn't qualify for any payment and is unused. I own nothing and have no herd no/green cert etc, and also very little experience of farming. Is there something I could do with this land if I was to have it signed over to me? Forestry? Drain it (as nearby landowners have done) and farm it? If it helped, I could also have more land (not adjoining) put into my name too. Would doing the green cert open any avenues for future potential? I understand to get a herd number, I would need a pen and crush. Any advice appreciated please. If there's potential in the land, it would be great to harness it.

Are you interested in farming? If so, your basic options are beef or sheep. Decide which and you’re a few steps forward in making a plan.

Green Cert would be useful, if you answered yes above.

You could plant forestry too as a lasting legacy and to generate a few Euro. Native species trees would be good.

Plenty help on here too so bookmark this page :-)

Not in a big way as I work full time already.

I just hate to see land idle that could be used for something. How would I find out the feasibility of forestry? Would I need to contact Coillte or is it something I'd do privately?

Coillte don't do private plantations any more. There are lots of forestry companies out there - just Google them for your area.

We used Green Belt when we planted 13 acres in 2015. They're nationwide as far as I know. You could also ask them about agroforestry, which seems to be mentioned a lot now.

Is building on it a possibility? Maybe a fishing lodge that you could rent out? As for trying to farm it don't waste your time or money its too small for nothing other than an expensive hobby. the average farm runs as a loss nowdays and 3+ hectares is well below the average size now.
