Licence and Insurance certificate stolen?

Had the car broken into overnight, recently...

Fortunately, they were unable to start it but they did abscond with the driving license and insurance certificate which were in the glove compartment beside handbrake.

Virtually nothing else taken although broken driver's side window was a nuisance and still finding a lot of glass in car.

Any theories as to why they would bother stealing the license and certificate?

Identity theft. Contact the guards about your license, ring the insurance company about the cert to make them aware.

Definitely report it to the Gardai. You also need to inform your insurance company and get a replacement license.

They took them because they can forge them to pass them off as genuine at checkpoints, etc.

I wouldnt think identity thieft was the intention of the break in, so I wouldn't worry about ending up in a Jason Bateman style scenario. They probably just grabbed whatever was handy.

That said, they are important documents, definitely report them stolen with the Gardai and apply for replacements.

    Thank you for the replies...

I drove to Garda station and reported the incident and then the 'scene of crime' guy arrived a few days later to check for prints, etc.

At the station, the officer on duty just thought it odd while the one that came to my property explained they would have been foraging for change left to pay toll booths.

Neither really threw much light on it or passed much remark.

Damned nuisance now replacing the license with the new system in place, have to make an appointment at the other end of the county, apparently...
