I got a new 55" smart tv and on the main set up its asking for which country I live in, Ireland or UK. If I select UK will I get more channels tuned in or what's the point of it at all at all?
I live on the border if that matters

    Which brand / model ?

    Does it have satellite ?

AFAIK most new TVs set to UK should get Freeview and then get Saorview on the 800's. It will depend on aerials and reception etc.

If you have a TV aerial setup that can receive UK channels, then yes, it should be a better idea to choose UK as your setup country, simply because their Freeview service has more channels than our Saorview.

I would expect your TV to also tune the 'other' country's service & put it at the bottom of the channel list, so with Saorview as the 'other', there will be less moving channels about if you want the 'other' service to have low-numbered placings in the list.

That's what I did with my own TV, & it all works fine.

I just bought a new tv too and the UK setup shows RTE1 but no other Irish channels.

The other tv I have in my kitchen picks up all the Irish channels. I presume this is a setup issue since the other tv is picking the channels up fine?

    That's weird - try a retune

unless, you have plugged it into a Virginmedia cable, because , and it's a long time since I tried , their version of RTE1 isn't encrypted

On Saorview and Saorsat RTE 1 is in HD btw.

I'd say the new TV has RTE1 +1, & Be3 as well. Check again.

This will be because the signal at that TV point is only good enough for that TV do decode one of the Saorview multiplexes, & not the other that carries RTE2, TV3, & TG4.

So the signal isn't coming through strong enough from the aerial for the tv to decode RTE2 etc? When I had it on Ireland it had RTE2, TV3 etc and it would be fine some times but pixellated and losing signal others.

It works flawlessly on another tv in the house though, we do have a strange setup with 2 splitters I think should I pop up to the attic and see if they're on the same splitter or different ones?

Another source of RTE1 could be the NI Freeview multiplex (mux), receivable in ROI from Divis & Brougher Mtn. transmitters, that carries TG4, RTE1, & RTE2, with these appearing in the Freeview EPG (TV in UK setting) at nos. 51, 52, & 53 respectively. But if you had RTE1 from there, you'd have the other 2 as well.

With the TV set to UK, anything picked up from ROI transmitters should be at the bottom of the list, in the 800 nos.

Just a small correction - NIMM with RTE1/2 and TG4 on Freeview is broadcast from Black Mountain as well as Brougher Mountain and Carnmoney Hill. It is on lower power than other Freeview multiplexes but because of transmission method is very stable signal and as you point out receivable in ROI. Don't forget RTE 1/2 are SD not HD although TG4 from Belfast is better quality of picturethan TG4 from Clermont Carn due to different compression.

I live on the border in Donegal, we're in range of the NI masts and the Irish ones. Still confused why it works perfectly on my kitchen tv though.

There are various reasons the kitchen TV could be getting a better signal, depending on whether the problem is overall poor signal from the aerial, or just something with the TV point where you have the new TV. Could be something as simple as the plug on the end of the cable needing to be re-fitted.

You were correct. I checked up in the attic and unbeknown to myself someone had plugged a double adapter into our splitter to run 4 connections through a 3 way splitter. Removed the double adapter and the obsolete cable and boom, we're back in business. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction :D
