Hi, I'm wondering if you're claiming for dental work do you receive the money as a tax credit or do you get a cheque from revenue? I'm currently working part time and recently got my p60 and I don't even earn enough to pay tax (I pay a small amount of PRSI and USC) so a tax credit isn't really of any use. Thanks

You can get a refund from Revenue. They can issue cheques but will ask you for your bank details and pay to your bank acc if you have never claimed anything before.

You go onto myAccount and submit a form 12 for the year the expenses were incurred. In the tax credits section, you can claim health/dental expenses. Once submitted, a P21 balancing statement will go out to you, as will any refund of tax you may be due from that year.

If you didn't earn enough to pay tax last year, though, there won't be any point in doing it because there will be no tax there to refund. The credit will not make any changes to USC or PRSI paid, so you won't get those back unless they were deducted incorrectly at the time.
