Hi, I was just wondering If anyone out there have taken up teaching after 40. I am thinking of doing Hibernia course but wonder how much prejudice is there out there with principals who interview older applicants. I am really serious about this, have done a Batchelors and leaving cert Irish to go forward but am now afraid that my future investment might be wasted. I have worked in the business world prior to getting my kids on their feet and really feel that I could do a great job given the chance. If anyone out there is a principal I would greatly appreciate your view. Thanks

I was 39 when I started teaching and found no prejudice. I've worked in three different schools - all ET - and I've had no problem ever. I'm pretty sure it would be the same in other sectors. I'm a deputy principal and I know that older job applicants with a bit of life or other career experienced are welcomed in our school - and their c.v. is usually a bit more interesting that that of those who have just graduated. I'd say go for it if it's something you want to do. Best of luck.

Thanks so much for your reply, it has really given me a boost to continue on this road and I am excited to start the next chapter in my life. The kids are all in school now and I need to reclaim my identity before the walls close in.
Thanks again for your view on this.
