    Hi there,

I am seeking some opinions on recommendations for buying a new vehicle. This is not for myself and i am only helping out someone who doesn't know much about motors.

They have 1.8 turbo diesel 2000 Ford Focus Gia. They are looking to scrap this and get either an alternative style engine or lower.

We don't know where to start really..just looking to know what is the best value motor on the market with a good reputation
...and with a good re-sale value.

Please advise, many thanks in advance

Do they still need a 7 seater?

No, it doesn't have to be 7-seater, but ideally 5 seater

Something Golf sized, or more Mondeo sized. Do they have a budget set?

Open to all options....anything less than 30k.

So is there any criteria beyond the perception of getting good deal?

Spending 30k gives so many options and there are so many great cars out there for that money or less, but it’s kinda subjective.

Are they looking to keep the car long term?
    What’s the annual mileage?
How many people will they be carrying?

It is Ford Focus Ghia not what you had in.

Not sure who has deals on at the moment but Nissan do a lot so maybe they might like to look at the Nissan Micra,Pulsar and Qashqai.
The best thing do do is go into some dealers look at as many cars as you can, enjoy and find something in budget that you or they like.

A Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross might be in budget if they want something a little higher that looks great. No harm looking at one anyway.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

we are looking for more of a middle of the road type family car, with space and comfort.

Also, does any one know how scrappage deals work? i.e. does the trade in car needs to have tax and insurance already in place to trade it in as a scrappage deal?

Each manufacturer has different terms and conditions but generally you have to have owned the car for at least 6 or 12 months and it has tax and nct. The new car also has to be registered to the same person as it is on the car you are scrapping.

Nissan's terms and conditions for example:
    https://www.nissan.ie/vehicles/car-deals/Scrappage%20Deals.html

It's not actually a scrappage scheme ie they don't have to scrap the car. These scrappage dealers are another term for manufacturer's discount.
