Put a new battery into the mower, given that the old one was dying fast. The problem, however, seems to be the mower itself, it discharges the battery when it isn't in use. Has anyone ever encountered this before?

I haven't seen it but considering how simple the wiring is it shouldn't be too hard to trace (compared to a car).

You could just either disconnect the battery or fit an isolator switch, that would protect it when not in use.

Don't rule out the possibility that the new battery is faulty. Can you find a date stamp on the new battery to see when it was made it might have been is stock for years before being sold.
