new pair of black jeans hand washed, in luke warm water, bit of washing powder, seem to have faded already.

Well there are hipsters and denim aficionados out there who don't wash them at all, they rotate them and stick them in the freezer to kill any odours/bacteria. Yep. Apparently it's one way of getting good "fades", because when you do wash them the faded parts are more pronounced.

I have found different jeans from different makers vary with the fastness of their dyes. Even within the same maker. EG I have found Levi 501 blacks much more fugitive than the dyes in 511 blacks. Even down to where they were made. Levis from Turkey have the best dyes(and the best material) in my experience.

But yeah, what ...... says, cold washes. Even hand washes. My washing liquid of choice would be Woolite. Seems to not strip colour nearly as much as others and not just with jeans(powders the worse for it).

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I'd wash a pair of jeans every 3-6 months depending on wear. After 2 years they get retired.
