I recently got back into retro gaming and was looking for some fun platformers to play outside of the Mario/Sonic sphere, something fun that isn't too common. I have been playing some of the Disney megadrive games:

    Quackshot
    World of Illusion
    Castle of Illusion
    Mickey Mania

Any suggestions on games similiar you guys have would be appreciated.

Alex the kid. Can't remember was it Mega Drive or Master System or even both. Seen it on Xbox 1 around Christmas, was in my element.

It was on both, the megadrive version was The Enchanted Castle, I heard the the master system games were far superior.

FYP, pet peeve of mine :D

Ristar is a great Megadrive one, very similar visuals to Sonic with a pretty interesting game mechanic.

Pulseman is also another great, more obscure Japanese only title that should have been released in the west.

Both games I would love to own but they are pretty expensive, Pulseman in particular for a boxed copy with manual.

Has Ristar gone up in value too? When I picked that up it was only about 20 euro from what I remember.

Yeah Pulseman has gone off the charts in the last few years, I remember when it could be had for under 50! Silly me kept putting off buying a copy.

Cheapest I have seen a boxed copy was CEX for £40, not breaking the bank but still fairly expensive for a pretty common game.

Wiz 'n' Liz on the Megadrive/Genesis, was always impressed by the smooth/fast animation

Yeah the speed of that game always blew me away, really shows you what the Megadrive could do.

Just realized nobody has mentioned Rocket Knight Adventures! By far one of the best games on the system.

Wiz n Liz looks pretty cool, looks to really make use of that "blast processing".

Rocket Knight is a great game, Sparkster the sequel or prequel is also supposed to be really good, don't know if it was released outside of Japan though.

Sparkster had a PAL release alright, pretty pricey one that.

I never liked kid chameleon. Never understood why people like it.

Rocket Knight Adventures is my second favourite mega drive game. It's just amazing. However it's closer to a contra game than a platformer.

On the snes do re mi fantasy is the best platform that isn't Mario. It's a sequel to the god awful milons secret castle but don't let that put you off. It's absolute quality.

Same composer as symphony of the night. She did most I do the Konami mega drive soundtrack work. Made that yamaha chip sing. Did some fantastic chip tune work on the msx as well.

The Indiana Jones game on the SNES is a great title, though ultimately a reskin of the Super Star Wars games.
I've a want on me for the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy on the SNES as well, but it's expensive.

Yeah I had that for my Megadrive towards the end of the consoles lifespan. Bought it from a mate for five pounds! Along with James Pond 3 and a few others.

Very much inferior to the NES originals and far more expensive.

I'm only missing the third one, I have the first two on the Famicom.
I believe the Famicom one has superior music or something?

Not sure how accurate the Trilogy versions are, compared to the original NES versions, but there's an MSU1 hack of Trilogy available now with the original NES soundtrack.

Always loved WB3: Monster Lair, although I've seen it noted as one of the worst games on the Mega Drive a couple of times which is frankly madness.

Been playing Pinochio with the young lad a bit lately and it's gorgeously animated with great controls. It's a bit confusing though I need to look at a FAQ cos I'm just going around in circles.

Is WB3 the one that has SMUP sections in it?

Pinochio looks pretty cool, Disney really had great games back in the 16 bit era, definitely some of the best platformers on the Megadrive.

The SNES music is inferior but there's also other issues. It just doesn't look as nice as the NES games with many visual effects missing and no parallax scrolling which is insane on a SNES game.

For the hundreds of euro you will spend on the trilogy you can get just get the original 3 on famicom, the cutscenes are impressive but the story is garbage so you aren't missing out that much.

Very interesting. Have to say, I find the MSU1 stuff interesting in general. It's like a "what could have been". I wonder if there's a list of the MSU1 releases to date anywhere?

MSU just would not have been practical at the time. All it does is allow the SNES to access massive amounts of memory fast and if you could do that it would have lead to NEO GEO price carts.

Still it's probably a very good indication of what the SNES CD/Playstation could have been.

Most of them are created by the same 4 or 5 people over at Zeldix.

    http://www.zeldix.net/f45-msu-1-hacking

I've contributed to a good few of the soundtracks. Mainly games that are arcade ports (SF2) or that had better soundtracks from other systems (Dracula X).

You'll like these. The SF2 one in particular because they found a way of adding the heavy damage themes...

Wiz 'n' Liz was a pretty solid platformer for the Mega Drive.

    Risky Woods wasn't bad either.

There was a guy on the Sega 16 doing colour hacks of Mega Drive games that mostly looked great.
