What type of a bed do I have?

Hi, the bed in my rented house is a has a bed frame as normal. But the mattress is attached to a under frame of wood and can be raised by pulling a rope which raised the bottom of the mattress up on hinges near the headboard. This raises it at a controlled angle. Basically you can’t remove the mattress from the bed frame without a lot of work as it’s attached an under bed wooden frame and it’s also attached to hinges.

Not explaining this very well but let me know if you know what it is or I can post pics...

Maybe that would be it, the landlord bought me a new mattress but it’s kind of pointless because you can’t seem to replace the existing one because the mattress is so effing attached to the under wooden bed frame and hinges

It's most likely secured to the board by something. Have you looked at the underside of the board and around the edges of the mattress for clamps or screws?

If you can't get the original off why not just lay the new one on top of the old one?

Not really attached to the head board. Just to hinges on the bed frame and the mattress has a wooden underboard.

Yeah if new mattress is to go on the old mattress then fair enough. Means a soft spongy bed no?
