Saw this picture earlier, what's the story here? I thought all the charging spaces were free to park in?

    Shocking

Need to give Gerry Kelly a shout.

On a more serious note, AFAIK parking rules still apply in a charging spot, so I know locally that you are allowed to park in the city centre for 1hr free, after that a traffic warden can give you a ticket.

    Even in a charging spot.

Perhaps while charging..effectively this guy is stopping someone else from charging

No free parking in Dublin even when charging.

I can see a lot of tourists getting caught out with that :pac:

Due to a small number of chargers in Dublin it's probably a good thing to enforce the parking laws to stop people abandoning their cars in the bays. However, even better would be to make the charging spaces EV only. Maybe this will happen one year.

Isn't it illegal to be parked and not charging? So if they were fully charged and leave the car in the bay they are illegally parked.

Bit stupid clamping then in the bay though they should have been lifted and clamped elsewhere.

Edit... Missed its not plugged in, should definitely have been lifted and clamped elsewhere

imagine if it was free - there'd be an electric car there at 7am and the same car would probably be there at 5pm.

States clearly in esb guide that local parking reulations must be adhered to.

The clamp would be more appropriate on the Astra in the charging space beside it tbh

I know where that is and there is no free parking in that spot. It's only been designated as a charging spot with the green paint a bit over a year - before that you'd find everyone and anyone parked there so the green paint has helped keep it free for EVs but it's still not free to park.
Prime Dublin 2 spot, I'm not surprised tbh.

Edit: technically it's Dublin 8 but it's a 5 minute walk or less to Grafton Street/Stephen's Green.

Pedantic hat, its Dublin 8 not 2.

There's only one charging spot there AFAIK, a bit unusual TBH. Unless they changed it recently.

You're correct, only one space is a 'designated' charge & park space despite the possibility that two cars can charge simultaneously.

A few dart stations have charge points which are free to park and charge

    They are private property (IE)

Any Dublin city Council parking space must be paid for while charging. The charge is free, but the parking must be paid for in every Dublin City Council parking spot in Dublin City.

DCC it's pay for parking regardless.
Well known information at this stage, no excuse for the owner.

So many tourists driving their EVs thousands of KMs to get to Dublin, then can't read a sign telling them they need to pay for parking..

We currently get free electricity for our EVs, I'd love free parking too but am happy enough with that.

It's more the "tourists" from Cork / Galway etc. that are getting clamped as they presume parking is free for EVs like back home

I understand that, I live in the country too where it's free to park although I'd always check the sign post if going into Dublin.

Probably better to have a higher rate to use one to encourage efficiency.

It's not quite city centre, but you can park for free whilst charging in the car park at Heuston Station.

A bit of a bargain all round, if the location suits....

Think this is advertised as time-limited - At Blackrock its limited to 3 hours to stop blocking by commuters

So the solution is to prevent everyone from charging for the potentially hours it takes to remove the clamp?

Clamps are a stupid solution. Issue the ticket, if people don't pay, prosecute. Ridiculous practice should be completely banned.

Funnily enough, I saw an i3 parked at the charging point in Parnell Square at the week-end. It wasn’t charging (which I thought odd), and when I got back it had a ticket but no clamp.

Nothing to indicate a limit at the charging point in Heuston Station car park. Mind you, nothing to say anything about free parking either. I checked with the attendant, who confirmed parking was free whilst charging: no mention of any time limit.

I probably shouldn’t have mentioned this at all, as it seems something of a well-kept secret, as both bays seem to be free most of the time.

Any idea why we don't see lots more ev cars clamped at street e-car spaces? I have never seen one, and pass lots of them on a daily basis. I am pretty sure that they are not all paying for parking - I watch for that and hardly ever see it (some could use tag parking, but definitely not all).

My sense is that there is a tolerance for ev cars not paying for parking whilst charging. May not be official policy, but a blind eye seems to be turned by clambers.

Possibly, but would you want to risk it?

Clamp them once and they’ll learn. Ticket them and they’ll continue to use it. The amount of people who ignore tickets is very very high

Just a thought, but has anyone worked out whether the "normal" cost of the otherwise free electricty exceeds the parking charge for somewhere in the yellow zone (i.e. central, most expensive areas)?

Nope, not for the vast majority of EVs. The 24hr non discounted 0.18c/kWh average is far more than most EV driver's actually pay for home charging on nightsaver ( 0.07c/kWh - 0.10c/kWh ), which would be what most EV drivers would consider the benefit to be.

    Some examples:

    Nissan Leaf 3.3kW - 3.3 x 0.18 - €0.59 per hour of charging
    Nissan Leaf 6.6kW - 6.6 x 0.18 - €1.18 per hour of charging
    Hyundai Ioniq 7.4kW - 7.4 x 0.18 - €1.33 per hour of charging
    BMW i3 7.4kW - 7.4 x 0.18 - €1.33 per hour of charging
    BMW i3 11kW - 11 x 0.18 - €1.98 per hour of charging
    Tesla Model S/X 11kW - 11 x 0.18 - €1.98 per hour of charging
    Tesla Model S/X 16.4kW - 16.4 x 0.18 - €2.95 per hour of charging
    Renault Zoe 22kW - 22 x 0.18 - €3.96 per hour of charging

So yeah... you need to first consider the value of a kWh to the EV driver to be a price for power that's far above what they typically pay to charge and even then the bulk of EVs on the road even at their peak charging speed wouldn't even remotely approach the €2.90/hour of the yellow zone.

In my case the value I'd put on the power would be the same as I pay at home (0.0651c/kWh):
    BMW i3 7.4kW - 7.4 x 0.0651 - €0.48 per hour of charging
I park in the yellow zone quite a bit.

Thanks for that, and taking the time to put the numbers together!

I'm not sure I'd agree with the logic of comparing it to the cost of home charging. It would make no sense to drive to a charging point in a yellow zone just to charge: I'd want to be paid to do that, never mind get the electricity for free!

I was thinking more of the case where you need to park in town anyway. You have the choice of a standard place at €2.90/hour or, on your figures, for say an i3 11kW at 92c/hour or 1.80/hour depending on what rate you compare it to. Not zero, which is what I'd hoped (free parking!), but the saving would add up over time. There's also the issue that the charging spaces are, at least for now, more often free than the places around them (try getting parking in Earlsfort Terrace/Hatch St. during the working day).
