    Hi,

I'm after a 4x4 that I can use for some greenlaning but won't have my back broken or my diesel tank heavily drained on a daily drive. Have around 6k to spend and not sure what to get. Anyone got any suggestions? Kind of fancied a Disco 3, but not sure what they're like on reliability.

    Thanks!

You can have 2 of these things but not 3....

I've driven a landcruiser as a daily for the last 10 years.. never got it stuck, utterly reliable but don't expect anymore than 30 mpg in old money...

Buy a cheap suzuki jimny for greenlanning and buy a comfortable car for the weekly commute. Any 4x4 that's good off road will be very thirsty on road

Only issue I'm having is the cost of 2 insurance policies! But that might be the way to go.

If you've a driving of other cars extension on your current policy you could always have the little 4x4 in someone else's name and then the only cost on paperwork is keeping it taxed and tested.

Nothing the size or weight of a Landcruiser is going to be frugal.

Hmm, but doesn't it need to have an insurance policy on it to be driven on my extension?

No hoping exactly frugal, but more isn't going to be a 20mpg kind of job.

Not if you're with liberty or a few other insurance companies. However if you're with Aviva or someone similar then yes it'd need it's own policy.

Only way you'll know for sure is by checking your insurance certificate and policy documents.

Commercial or 5/7 seater? There are a few 5 seater you can tax for 333 euro including range Rovers.
I'd be looking at landcruiser or hilux.
Disco is nice. They're like driving a big petrol car as regards fuel bills if they're a proper off roader.
Beware of some SUVs if you want to leave tarmac. They look the part but that's all really.

Suzuki Jimny on A classic policy and a regular car as normal. Or a daihatsu 4trak may work too.

    I bought a 03 grand vitara a while back.
Makes 30-34 mpg and it's comfortable enough to drive. Ladder chassis and low range gearbox for the offroad use. I've been very happy with it.

I have a landcruiser too. 30mpg is about it. Quite comfortable and at times I take it to work for the sake of it. Wouldn’t have thought we have enough green lanes in Ireland to green lane in though.

I don't have a company or that to get a commercial policy! Unless there's another way to do it I don't know?

There's plenty of green lanes around the Donegal area where I'm from. Hence looking!
