Social Justice

Pretty disgusted by SVP for their ad on linkedin.
"In the run up to #worlddayofsocialjustice on the 20th of February, SVP will highlight one reason each day why we need to continue to work for social justice both nationally and internationally. "

Today they have the quote: "People living in direct provision currently do not have equal access to work and are forced to survive on 21.60 euro per week"

No one in Ireland is being forced to survive on 21.60, neither citizens nor asylum seekers.

Accommodation is provided which includes household maintenance, three meals a day, electricity and heating, laundry, TV including TV licence, and a medical card.

Eur21.60 is the tax-free personal allowance and is paid for each adult and child. Hypothetically, Eur4500 mainly discretionary income for a family of 2 adults and 2 children.

No, I wouldn't like to live in Direct Provision but if I was escaping a war zone I'd be delighted to receive such services. I think Direct Provision is a fantastic system. Who does it benefit for a charity to mislead the public in this way?

Hopefully like most SJW propaganda this will be proven to be trying to mislead the public and will then be ignored, they are trying to create a socialist victim culture here but I dont think the average Irish person will fall for it.

What do the SVP got to do with a random internet term?

With government funding north of €10,000,000 of tax payers money. SVP should think long and hard about biting the hand that feeds them and see what railing against the Government has achieved for Oxfam in the UK.

Anyone who misleads/exaggerates in the name of Social Justice I will refer to as such, and SJW has progressed past the internet at this stage IMO.

What use is that if no one understands what you talking about?

    We are getting a little off topic however;
If you do not know what a 'Social Justice Warrior' is then you will have a fun time learning as it can be an interesting subject.

Usually If I dont know an abbreviation on the internet I usually type it into google which will give me a definition.

Really? Personally I feel most people miss the real issue around direct provision. People talk about the fairness or lack thereof involved in DP itself, but IMO the real issue is the bureaucratic inertia around the whole asylum system. Direct Provision would be fine as a temporary measure while people's cases are adjudicated on and a decision is being made whether to deport or grant asylum, but the problem with it - like so many other things in Irish governance - is that in practise it becomes a quasi-permanent way of life while people are given the runaround in a legal limbo of a system which takes years upon years to even begin hearing a case.

That's the real issue. Direct Provision itself and its associated debate is a mere side effect of the fact that in the Irish legal and political system, it simply takes an unacceptably long time to get anything done. And that issue is not being dealt with, or even spoken about.

In short: everything in Ireland from the courts to the healthcare system seems to operate on a time-scale of years rather than days and weeks, and this is something every citizen in Ireland should be pissed off about. There's no legitimate excuse for it except chronic disorganisation and a resistance to reform which would, while causing total upheaval for those used to the existing system, would ultimately lead to a system which actually functions.

Backlogs and gridlock should never, ever be accepted as "just the way the system works". Where they are identified, they should be regarded as unacceptable and as an absolute top priority for fixing.

I have a rough idea of what it generally refers to but I don't understand how it relates to the St. Vincent dePaul which is usually a bunch of middle aged to retired volunteers looking for something to do.

Since the SVP are explicitly campaigning for Social Justice, I'm sure they would be pleased with the label.

As would any decent human being. Who's against social justice?

So NGOs (many of which receive Government funding in one form or another) shouldn't question or critique Government policy?€10 million is good value given the work that the SVP does across the country.

No one is forcing anyone to come here at gunpoint and go into DP they do it of their own free where they are looked after by the state better than many Irish people i must add we really are a soft touch for scam artists to claim asylum here.

You're right, the term SJW has progressed well past the internet at this stage. In fact, it's now comfortably in the realm of cliche, and is used by people who prefer juvenile insults to grown-up debate.

Hopefully there is no proselytising or evangelising work going on while they hand out the taxpayers money to vulnerable people.
    SVP have The Rule.
The vocation of the Society's members, who are called Vincentians, is to follow Christ through service to those in need and so bear witness to His compassionate and liberating love. Members show their commitment through person-to-person contact...
I'm not entirely sure what the connection between SVP and De Paul is. Is it a non-religious branch of SVP that focuses on the homeless?

As soon as I see someone use the term 'SJW' as a slur or an insult, I pretty much dismiss anything they have to say. Same with 'feminazi' and 'cuck'.

All signs they've spent too much time in an internet echo chamber.

SVP's main "business" is volunteers visiting people in their homes.

DePaul is a separate charity and they deal with the homeless.

There isn't.I'm not a Catholic but am a member, and it would be a serious hindrance to the work of the society if it's members proselytise-many of the people the society helps are non-Christians and would be reluctant to approach us for help if that was the case.I'd certainly want nothing to do with them.

Most of the money spent on vouchers and fuel assistance comes from public donations and money raised by the shops, not from the government.

Yes,both were founded separately by people inspired by St.Vincent de Paul but I'm not aware of any other connection.

It only harms a good a cause when charities get things wrong, I think St Vincent De Paul do great work though and I'd be surprised if they were trying to deceive the public.

Actually, many of the people in direct provision have been forced at gunpoint.

What the poster meant was words being thrown around loosely to try stifle debate,, if someone says they favour strict immigration control chances are some leftist will shout " nazi " or if someone says they don,t support repeal the 8th or if someone wants to talk about men,s rights chances are someone from the left will shout " misogynist " or if someone says something negative about Islam chances are someone from the left will shout " Islamophobia " I get exactly where the poster Eric Cartman is coming from .

Presumably you're referring to the circumstances under which they fled their country, rather than something they're experiencing in Ireland, correct?
