It was a joy to watch the hurling in HD via eir sport at the weekend but a disaster with TG4 sd. Will eir sport hd spur TG4 to go HD soon??

    No. They have no money.

Nearly all the feeds these days are in 1920x1080 incluing the GAA. Its standard.

Even the RTE HD Channel dont broadcast in the resolution source. They downscale it for broadcast purposes.

TV3 have the rugby. They downscale it on Saorview.

Only RTE are committed to the platform. The legislation needs to be rewritten for the penny pincher stations.

I just don't watch any station that is not in HD.

If it's on TV3 it will be on ITV in HD.

If they are receiving public funding then it should be a condition that they provide the same level of service to everyone.

Tend to agree. Once you watch something in HD you don't want to go back to SD. Remember TG4 is in HD on satellite.

but you have to pay for the satellite privilege ie need a card.

Is the soccer game tonight (Chelsea Vs Barca) on ITV? I think ITV has snooker.

The Champions League and Europa League are BT Sports exclusive in the UK. I think the only live football ITV have now is England games and the odd international on ITV4.

OP you talk about this as something new. Eir Sport (née Setanta) have held this package for the past thirteen years, with at least one HD channel for the past seven.

One of the reasons I got Saorsat was on the off-chance TG4 would go HD there before Saorview .

The other reasons were that I can use it with the existing satellite box, and it can show me 90% of what's on TV/3e/Be , earlier, in HD , and with a working series link.

But as a license payer it really annoys me that TV3 got a free run on the €80m and reduced carriage fees on Saorview, don't use Saorsat and the knock on effect that TG4 isn't in HD on either :mad:

That's a bloody shambles anyway. It should have been the case, that Saorsat was a mirror of Saorview services. It should've been sorted so that when you're buying your Saorview "slot", you're also buying into Saorsat.

Without even going into the HD versus sub-SD shambles on Saorview, that Saorsat issue should not be an issue!

No, because it’s not just Saorview, its saor view. Literally free view. Having a sub effectively precludes a channel from being free to air.

That doesn’t mean eir Sport couldn’t broadcast encrypted terrestially - not as part of Saorview - but to what end? The costs would likely outweigh the small number of viewers who would choose to receive the channel that way. You’d need to put in place and manage a conditional access system, supply receivers, viewing cards etc.

If you want pay TV - which is what eir Sport is - you should look to a pay TV provider (but not Virgin Media in this case for obvious reasons).

For the RWC, remember that a package of live rights including all of Ireland’s games will be licenced to a FTA broadcaster, so all is not lost.

Absolutely, but only some of them. It’s becauee Ireland’s games are listed (protected for free to air coverage). As well as Ireland’s pool games, the sublicensed package normally also includes the opening game and one game in each knockout round, including the final.

Anyone with satellite can see a great TG4 HD picture on a feed on 28 East at present. Good strong signal.

    Frequency 12596
    Polarization Horizontal
    Symbol rate (0)7200

Channel name Nemo v Sleacht Neil.

I've never quite understood the argument in relation to TG4 and Saorview re this. Ok, TV3 are a private company and may have this (very weak) excuse about money. But TG4 are publicly funded and shouldn't have this problem since 2RN/RTENL are also a public body so does it really matter since its government money merely moving from one public body to another?

Its yet another (bad) indication of what Saorview has become. Basically been going wrong since the day they picked the Nordig standard.........

Letting TG4 have it for free, or at a reduced rate, would defeat the purpose of 2RN. You might as well say take it from the money for Social Welfare or Justice. And if TG4 got it for free, TV3 would want the same. Not a feasible option when 2RN have loans to repay. No licence fee increase for 10 years has consequences.

At 31 December 2016, RTÉ had bank borrowings of €57.9 million (2015
    €50.6 million) comprised of:
    • 2rn, RTɒs transmission subsidiary, has a €40 million project finance
loan facility agreement with Barclays Bank as part of the funding for
the transmission and distribution infrastructure required for the Digital
Terrestrial Television (DTT) project. This facility is outstanding at 31
December 2016. An additional term loan facility for €13 million was
also arranged in 2014, which was fully drawn down in 2016. Capital
repayments on this loan will commence in 2017.
    • The Bank of Ireland term loan facility drawn down in 2012 and
repayable over a five-year period with €1.9 million outstanding at 31
December 2016. In January 2016 a new revolving credit facility for €15
million was also arranged, of which €3 million is drawn at 31 December
    2016.

TV3 IN HD on Saorview would be a very welcome addition with the Rugby & Tuesday CL games there now.

Obviously there's a serious cost I'd imagine in doing so?

I'd be happy to pay an extra €20 in the licence fee if it meant all channels on saorview were in HD.

Perhaps a portion of the licence fee should be portioned off for future investments.

The government should really pull the finger out here and just increase the funding so that the saorview service is of a decent standard.

With more people retiring over the next 20 years the pool of saorview viewers will only get bigger.

As for eir in HD, casting is not a great option.
I have a great picture when casting bt/eir until there is sudden movement on the screen like a ball travelling fast. It becomes very difficult on your eyes to watch.

I just wish eir/bt could be on satellite without the sky filler.

Not as much as the money the station had previously written off and who bought their own loans back at a huge discount.

They could decide tommorow to go HD on Saorview, but they havent up to now as some might say they would be happy just to pay the lower SD tarriff. That probably fulfills the terms of their Irish broadcasting licence.
