Have this in my attic

There has been some noise from the attic for the last week or two and then a ferocious amount of noise today. Went up to investigate and there was a bird flying around. After looking around a bit, I also found a dead bird that was just stuck into the insulation on the gable-end. See two attached pictures.

Ok, so I figure that they are in now and although I can’t see a nest, I guess it is there somewhere.

    I presume they are starlings?

Any idea of how long they will stay? I want to get work done on the attic this summer, and probably no builder will go near it if it has resident birds.

Also, my wife gets quite bothered about these kind of things and has been reading online that they can bring disease etc.
Is there any truth to that or any other concern?

    Thanks in advance.

It's too early for a nest but they were 'scouting out' your attic and then couldn't find their way out. Try and spot where they were getting in and get it blocked up fairly soon.....

As said, find where they are accessing the attic - it can be a very small hole - and close it off. I have to stuff chicken wire in the gutter at this time of year, every year, because of them.

As others have said, close off the hole now to prevent any further access. If you leave it a couple of weeks they'll have started nest building and at that point it will be a crime to block the hole or interfere with the nest.

And re: your wifes concern about disease etc, there's nothing to worry about in that regard.

I have been in quite a few attics over the years in connection with work, and regularly seen dead birds, rodents, nests lying around. The atmosphere in an attic gets so hot and dry when the sun comes out that they get dessicated very quickly, like mummies. So no hygiene problem. But I strongly advise that everyone makes sure their cold water tank has a lid. Modern plastic ones come with a lid, but if not, you can make one out of a piece of plywood. I've seen the slowly decomposing corpses of birds in water tanks, and its not a pretty sight.
