    Hi

Probably a silly question but I'm just enquiring about a second car I have, I bought a newer car 10 months ago, and i didn't declare my older car off the road, does this mean I'd have to pay back the 10 months tax in order to tax it again? Car hasn't been used its in garage. Was going to tax it again and give it a long drive down the country, until someone said I'd probly have to pay for 10 months tax when unused:( or is there a way around this? Are the old gardai forms for "car wasn't in use" scrapped? Hate paying 10 months tax for a garaged car:(

    Regards

Yes you would have to pay.

Best option and fully legal is sell it.... To a family member or friend and buy it back... No money has to exchange and this scraps any tax owed. They don't follow up previous owner either.

You could do the old 2 changes of ownership switcheroo

Maybe keep it in a relatives name as your third party extension on your own car doesn’t cover cars you own.

If you do this within a few weeks period would they not get suspicious? Wouldn't new owner need to insure it to tax it? It's an older car highish insurance

    No they don't care.

You have no idea how little of a clue they have!

    No they don't care.

But you'd need insurance details filled on tax form to tax it?

They never took the details off the insurance certificate when you had to go to the tax office, online there's no way to verify the insurance details you entered.

The only time you need insurance is when the 4 wheels are on a public road.

As for the sell and repurchase trick to avoid the back tax. I'm sure that they are well aware of the process, but just like when people lied on a statutory declaration that they hadn't used the vehicle it'll be years before they close the loop hole.

But you'll need insurance policy anyway if you want to drive it, so why would you want to make up the policy number of tax form?

Cause the new owner will tax it and then I'll buy car back from them? Wouldn't they need insurance details in tax form to update tax

They don't need to tax it, you have 21 days after buying to declare it off the road but if they sell it straight back to you then there's no need to do anything.
