One way train system?

Reluctant commuter by car wondering why its not possible to travel to any other city outside dublin by rail before 9.30am? I currently work in Waterford but have potential future career opportunities in Galway and Cork. I'm walking distance from a train station with an excellent Dublin service and in fairness a relatively frequent service to the aforementioned secondary cities.... But out of luck if i want to be at my desk before 10. I have several colleagues that would love to use the train if it was an option but it's really not.
It's not as if we are looking for hourly service but one service to Cork, Galway, Waterford, Limerick that arrived for 8 would be very popular or maybe I'm wrong?

    OP what's your local station?
There is train services into the cities you mentioned that arrive in time for people to work so maybe if you could explain your gripe a little more so people understand what kind of service you are looking for.

You cannot get to Cork or Galway from Dublin before 09:30hrs, which is what the OP is complaining about.

I kind of assume if the demand was there. the service would be, even if you look at the private bus company on the Dublin-Galway route don't offer this, and they are already have a better timetable than the train..

Hi. I'm based in Newbridge but that is fairly irrelevant as the results would be the same regardless.
Thanks for the reply and i think i would have made the same assumption myself if i hadn't checked but i have done my homework on this and there isn't a service that arrives before 9 in any of those locations.
I just think that it should be possible to reach these locations by train in the morning on weekdays at some point between 7 and 9am. A sizeable portion of workers could have enough flexibility with their work hours for this to be a desirable option for them. A report this week said that Galway has worse traffic than Dublin but there is no option for commuters to use the train unless they start with at 10 which is a joke really. Same for Waterford and Cork.

I think there is a difference between making do because there is no option and a lack of demand. I think there is also a tendancy to extrapolate from a lack of demand on the fairly pointless 9-10am services that there would be a lack of demand at peak times. Even the roads have calmed down at that time!

Butt there's quite a few services so your premise is wrong.
e.g., the Cobh to Cork commuter line runs in the early morning, or you can live in Oranmore/Athenry etc and commute into Galway for 08.10 or 08.35.

An even more blatant example is Belfast. a substantial place of employment, business and third level education, which could be reached by leaving Dublin, Drogheda or Dundalk at a reasonable time, if there only was a train.

Bit limited though rather than a Dublin service say that could serve all or some of the intervening stops along the way. Handy if you live in either of those towns. Not enough reason to move there though....

You can get from to Limerick from Cork for 08:34!

And from Galway to Limerick for 08:25!! And vice versa for 08:10!!!

Why would anyone think of living in Dublin and working in another city?

Galway to Dublin makes sense, the othrr way doesn't.

Because the entire railway network should be determined only on 5day-a-week commuters...
Why bother even have trains running at the weekend.

All the people getting of in Kent at half nine thinking "I'm glad I couldn;t get to where I'm going any sooner, and arriving at half ten would be too late"...

Unless you work in medical devices. Also you are not just talking about Galway, having a service along that route services all of the towns along the route including Athlone which has a large IT and is a center for employment.
Secondly most families need two people working at the moment to make ends meet. If you are working in a specialized area then there may only be limited jobs in certain locations and one of you has to make the commuting sacrifice to further their career. Some people may be happy in any old job but others want or need more job satisfaction than that and are willing to travel for that. And Galway was just an example.

In my situation I don't live in Dublin, I live in Newbridge. I commute to Waterford as the role that I am in there are probably 30 jobs nationally and 10 at a more senior level and when one comes free you go where that is. My partner is self employed in a business involving heavy machinery so we are located here for better or worse.
It looks like diesel is about to take a steep jump in price and I would like the option of commuting by bus or train. The first train gets to Waterford station at 9:40. The first bus 10.00. I would be willing to travel to Carlow in order to join up with another service but there isn't any. This includes private bus providers, and bus eireann. I was looking around at the other two sites that have jobs in my area, Cork and Galway and they don't have a service either. I can't be the only person in this kind of situation can I?
I don't think I will be if diesel goes up and these longer commutes are no longer viable?

Most of their focus would be getting people into Dublin. They probably don't have the capacity available to go the other way around so early.

You seem to be a bit puzzled as to why it doesn't suit you. Public Transport doesn't suit me either. Which is why I'm driving. You accept a trade off for working in a bespoke role, which could see you placed anywhere. You need to accept public transport will be less likely to be suitable to your needs.

Poor management/inertia from IÉ and a general sense of "we've always done it this way" has led to the situation where it's impossible to get to most major destinations from Dublin before 9am by train. Elsewhere in Europe it's standard practice.

There's a 7:35 train from Heuston that gets me to Athlone for 9am on a regular basis. That same train gets me to Tullamore for 8:30.
The same train doesn't reach Galway until 10:08.

Irish Rail were willing to run a direct train through Nenagh to Dublin into the teeth of the congested Heuston approaches, but an 0600 Heuston-Cork semi-express stepping into the slot of the current 0800 Mallow-0823 Cork and with a connection at Thurles or the Junction to facilitate a pre 9am Limerick arrival? No sir, not even on Mondays.

Do they have to pay drivers more to start earlier perhaps.

drivers are running early services currently so it's unlikely that would be the case.
