Puppy won’t do his business on walks

    Morning all,

I have a four month old springer spaniel and he just doesn’t seem to understand that walks are for doing his business. I’m not long in from a 30 minute walk round the park and no sooner had I the lead put away he had wee’d all over the floor.

He is full of energy when out, and always wanting to investigate everything and I think that’s the problem. He’s far too interested in everything going on around him to care or remember to do his business. Perhaps. I don’t know, but it’s all I can think of at the minute.

Would appreciate any comments on this!

    Thanks

Is he on the leash all the time during the walk?
Some dogs won't go while on the leash.

How's the house training going on within the home generally speaking? What's your routine? Will he go outside when he's at home? Will he go in the back garden when you're near him?

Start from scratch, bring him out after food, when he wakes, and every 30 mins or if you see a sign of him wanting to go (sniffing, circling etc) even when back from walks.
If he goes say something like "do your business" as he's going and praise him when done. Keep it up for a week or so then say it as he's starting to go or just before, praise him when done.
Once he's doing it outside all the time, and you can say the phrase to get him to go, try it on walks, stop by a tree or something and say it waiting until he goes.
It takes time, 4 months is young.

Went through this with my lad. Try walking him on the streets around your area. He’ll be picking up other dogs leaving their mark and he’ll want to add his. The park can be very distracting cos it’s so much to explore and he’s having a great time :)
