Hi all, we have a JRT who was used for breeding. He is a great little fella in all ways except one! He seems to be used to/prefer pooping in his bed. Now, he has plenty of space to do it elsewhere. Crate training doesn't work because he doesn't have any problem with it being in his bed but as a result I'm washing him constantly! I'm considering changing his bedding to straw/hay because it's less likely to sit on top where he can lie on it. Any ideas?

Have you tried giving him a treat when he poops outside?

    How old is the dog?
How long have you had him?
Does he pee in the house/in his bed?
You need to start housetraining him from scratch maybe?
If hes pooping in his bed, its probably a learned behaviour, if he was kept for breeding in a puppy farm - he was probably kept in a cage, and knows nothing else.
You need to do the work now - so after every meal, every half hour or so, take him outside to pee/poo. If he goes praise him highly. Give him a tasty morsel. If he doesnt pee/poo, back inside, until next time.
Watch him carefully after meals - circling, sniffing, even going into his bed, if you see any signs of getting ready to poo, say NO! and take him immediately outside. If he poos outside, tons of praise and a tasty treat.
JRT's are clever little dogs, he'll hopefully get the idea very quickly. Make it a game, praising him and making a big fuss when he pees/poos outside, and a treat, he will hopefully get the idea very quickly.
Being a puppyfarm dog, he hasnt a clue, so lots of patience and gentleness will get him there. Well done for taking him on.
    (ps has he been neutered?)

Thanks everyone. He is approx 5, have had him over a year now. During the day he is fine, it's at night that he does the deed. I think I may be able to do a few night runs for pees/poos and see if that works, but it's like he does it in secret, or he holds it until he's alone. Last night he was in a room with two blankets - one is clean and warm, the other was a sleeping bag that had been peed on and was waiting for the wash (forgot to pick it up off the floor) He chose the peed on, wet smelly one 😖 he's not bothered, but he is a stinky man now and needs another bath!

On a completely unrelated matter he's the most handsome little thing, sweetest personality, and I would highly recommend adopting an ex pf baby any day!
