Recommendations for HD Combi Sat Box

    Hello,

I bought the BORC HD DVB-S2 online and I'm not impressed. The Power button on the device moves channel up, up channel button does nothing. The batteries that came with it for the remote were oxidized and i needed to use new ones. Its a 15€ re stock charge if returned after 7 days so with delivery and restock charge its not worth the hassle. Its usable but what i don't like is the channel program menu, its pants, it has no TV schedule. Designed in Ireland, so it says, maybe by monkeys. There also seems to be a slight delay on the sound to picture.

Anyway if anyone can help, I'm looking for recommendations for a new Combi Sat Box that will give me UK FTA channels, Saorview via antenna connection, HD and with a good TV programs schedule, where i can see TV schedule.

    Thanks
    Stephen

How long have you had the box? If the goods were faulty on delivery then the seller should remedy that without extra expense to you. The restocking fee is probably for a change of mind rather than a faulty product. What has the seller said (other than on their website)?

You might also want to ask about your rights in the consumer forum here

The Formuler F1 is getting good feedback, costs 89 pounds + delivery.

    Thanks Ten Pin,

I've had it a couple of weeks as haven't had time to look at it. I've seen the restocking thing before, its on the website and is for any return, its a good way to fob people off. I kinda also wanted to put out there that the Borc is pants also. Just trying to get to post office etc and send is a pain

Thanks for your recommendation on Formuler 1, looks slick. Looks like i'd have to also buy the Terrestrial card also and the box for saorview antenna, I'll investigate further.

Top notch - Gigablue Quad HD Plus.

Decent - one of the good spec Edison boxes off freetv.ie (discount of you enter BOARDS when buying it).

Both Linux boxes, if you read a bit about it you'll be able to get a good EPG set up.

    Thanks budgemook,

I'll look at those, discount always helps

They can't contravene your rights by fobbing you off and adding on extra charges for defective goods. It's your decision of course but posters in the consumer forum will advise you on what you can do. If you paid by PayPal, maybe raise a dispute if the seller won't help.

Online sellers have to comply with distance selling and consumer rights law.

One thing that looks odd on their site is that all rated products have 5 stars, maybe try and resolve the problem with the seller and if they don't help you then add a review and see if it gets posted publicly.

The reviews look to be site specific so i doubt they'd let any bad reviews through. I hear what you are saying, money is not an issue and i have someone who needs the box so i'll just give to them. It's just the hassle of it and too many things to do.

Looking at freetv.ie its the EPG that i was really looking for as part of the combi box. Amiko have it on their box, Edison don't seem to.

They do have it. You'll want to customize it though, on either box.

Is there anything that has 7 day epg without Internet connection?

I think for the saorview channels you get that but not the freesat channels - or maybe the other way around. With Internet connection you will get it but without that you're relying on whatever comes with the signal as far as I understand it.

All Linux enigma powered boxes have a 7 day EPG they get directly from the satellite, not the internet.

Can they get that for the saorview channels too?

Yes. The 7 day epg is loaded the first time you go into a saorview channel. Its loads the epg for all the stations.

Edision OS Mega does have it. Any E2 box will have it. Amiko are NOT E2 boxes despite their claims. They are hacked versions of E2. Stay away if you want to have a bad experience due to hacked software and poor spec.

2 other boxes already suggested also.

WoS have an Xtrend 8500 for £148 with 4 tuners (2 Sat, 2 Terr).

    Might be worth looking at.

Thanks Everyone, I've learned somethings with your help.

I like the look of the Enigma EPG screen layout, looks to be a step up from the standard EPG.

For price I think I'll go with Edision™ OS Nino Combo. I do have two connections left on the LNB i'm connecting to so it might be better to get the extra tuner to allow me to watch another channel if recording. The Edison Mega seems a bit too pricey for only one more tuner that I'll need so the Formula 1 box is looking more attractive now and it too has Enigma 2.

    Thanks again

Does that have a terrestrial tuner for saorview though?

The Formula 1 has a DVB-C/T/T2 . Will that work for Saorview. I miss the old days when you have just 6 channels and plugged one cable in and that was it :o(

So you never need an Internet connection? Amiko mini combi fit this bill?

Should do. Whenever I am getting these for people I make sure there is a terrestrial tuner and 2 satellite tuners. Loads of the cheaper ones just have satellite tuners.

If you have a saorview TV you don't really need it but if you don't want to be switching source to get to the Irish channels etc I'd advise getting a terrestrial tuner on the box.

No. That is a closed source box not enigma so only now/next on satellite.

    Hi all,

Hope you don't mind me jumping into this thread.

I need to get a box in the next couple of days that is a combo and has both Irish & freeview channels. I am utterly hopeless with technology so would like a nice user friendly box that, if possible, updates itself or is almost idiot proof!!

I'm happy to get it from freetv.ie. Anything around the €100 mark is fine.

Any recommendations bearing in mind the idiot proof comment (and I'm referring to myself)!!

    Many thanks!

If looking for something simple probably best to avoid Linux boxes as they seem to be something you have to update yourself when new releases come out

Edision™ PICCOLLINO S2+T2/C Combi Receiver on freetv.ie will be easy enough. They will program the UK channels for you for €2 and you just need change settings for the terrestrial connection as it has this connection at the back. Not sure if it updates itself but it does have LAN port so maybe. Check with Freetv.ie. If you want to record and watch another channel you'll need two sat tuners and one terrestrial

    Anyone else have this box?

    https://www.satellitetv.ie/sat-boxes-ireland/borc-hd-dvb-s2-satellite-receiver

It was cheap but there was only the documentation/instructions that came with the box.

I am slowly learning to find my way around it but haven't tried scanning for new channels making new lists yet.
