    Hi all,

I think my exhaust manifold is cracked
From research online all the signs are pointing to it.
    • Smelly cabin
    • Loss of power
    • Fuel consumption up
    Has anyone had this fixed?
    What did it cost?

    Thanks.
    Chris.

There’s a good bit of ripping alright. Turbo comes out, you’d want a lift ideally.

Out of my experience level so unfortunately.
    Thanks for the info.

The one piece manifold is available spurious for around 80-100 stg.
I bought a kit with Manifold and studs and 2 gaskets for around 80 last year, still haven't fitted it yet.
I'll have to do it soon as it not only stinks at idle but it doesn't boost correctly either.
The Oem kit is pretty comprehensive it has a lot more parts than the cheaper ones.

That was my original thread Colm linked OP. I never got mine done. Effectively, it hasn't affected performance or MPG and only smells while the engine is cold and at idle. I priced around at the time the cost by main stealers was more than the value of the car. My friend and I had a look and I have a tiny pinhole in the weld.
It didn't fail nct because of it.

I keep saying no point in doing it because the car is getting old and I'll change it soon but I have no excuse to change it. Still driving perfect and comfortable!

Would you not be worried about the exhaust gases being in the cabin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,551 ✭✭✭SeaFields

I probably should be. The recirculation button is on permanently but as I said, the smell is only there when cold and idle if blower is on. I have seen some pics on the typeaccord forum of cracks and they are far far beyond what I have.

I've looked at changing the car a few times but never pulled the trigger but it's coming up on 13 years now with scandalous tax rate and "the old cars are fierce dangerous" insurance about to kick in so will probably soon. As much as I don't want to...

I only get fumes starting from cold, once moving there is no smell from mine. The manifold heats up and seals better when warm. If you look from underneath the with a lamp you can see the black soot stains under the heat shield.
I looked at a few old manifolds and they would be problematic to weld and may fail again. The spurious ones are a good copy of the genuine revised one in my opinion.

    Thanks everyone.
I'll price it up and see how much it is, I cant see myself spending anyway near that money for a car worth 4K at a push...
I will leave it on re circulation as recommended for the time being.

My brother manifold cracked in his 2004 Honda accord. It was out of warranty and possibly the year was 2011. Anyway he looked up the Honda website and found out that there was a recall on vehicles with this problem .he brought it to a dealership up north who fixed it for free.

Think the cutoff was 7 years and 125000 and some Honda SH -that was the case in the uk anyway. I think I read here of Honda Ireland refusing and uk dealers doing them?

That appears to be the case, Honda UK would fix for free in most cases, not all.
Honda Ireland are a different animal, I was offered a genuine kit for 350 but not labour. I opted to buy a spurious manifold and get it fitted by a local mechanic.
I went into the Accord knowing about it so I wasn't surprised.

There are several threads on the subject on the typeaccord forum and Irish contributors have said the same - honda Ireland didn't want to know but it seems Honda UK were decent about it and flexible in terms of the warranty period.

Universal Honda aren't really the same as Honda UK, they are more of a super dealer than a distributor.
I can kind of understand it but at the same time its a bit of a pisser.
That said the car doesn't owe me a lot so I don't mind, the Accord Tourer was in a pretty small shortlist when I bought mine, 390 tax, big boot, very comfy, and not VAG.:pac:

Did you get a price to fit it at the time?

I did but felt it was excessive, I can't remember how long it was quoted for but I felt I could get it done cheaper.

Thanks, I'll give the local lad a call and see how much he will charge.
Last time I asked about it he didn't seem to interested in the job.

I think its a bit of a ballache of a job to be fair, a lift would make it a lot easier.
When I get around to mine I'll find out I guess!

I'll let you know the quotes I get for mine to be fitted.
Cars only worth 3-4k but I know I wont get anything near as good for what I'd sell it for.

I was told about 6-7 hours labour if that helps. That was an estimate.

I posted in original thread too. Car now on 345,000 and the manifold has cracked again. But won't bother replacing it either. It's heading for 14 yrs old. It just smells little when cold. Once warmed up there's no smell. In fairness we've had car 10 yrs and never missed a beat or left us stranded. It goes and goes. Luckily had chain and manifold done couple yrs ago.
Most reliable car I've had in 25 years

What kind of Manifold was fitted when yours was done under warranty?
Was it the one piece or two piece type?

God it was so long ago.
I thought it was all one piece.
    The main manifold block.

That's interesting, I thought the one piece versions would be good for the life of the engine, obviously not.
I suspect the differences between alloy head and cast iron manifold in terms of heat expansion could possibly be the cause of this but its just idle speculation at this point.
Its easy to tell from the heat shield, the new one has two bolts holding it on the old one had three

    That's some serious milage.
    Great cars.

Would you not just weld it? No need for a new manifold

Its incredibly difficult to weld a cast manifold with any degree of success. Needs to be removed and pre heated then welded with cast rods and very slowly cooled down. Also all flat surfaces will then need to be re machined as the flanges will warp slightly.

    Replacement is the only way

I'm more worried about the price of the labor vs the parts.
Same amount of labor and no guarantee it will be successful.

Thats why I bought a spurious manifold, it was only 80 stg or so the labour is the bulk of the cost.
