Gun Shot Noise Machine - are they allowed?

    Hi,
Sorry for the ensuing absence of technical language. I don't know what the name is of what I am describing.

Several days ago I stated hearing loud gun shot noises - I presumed it was hunters as we have a lot of wild deer and other animals about, and even though I don't like hunting, I put up with it.

However then I noticed that this noise was coming day and night, and seemed to always be coming from the same place (although I don't know where that place is ) - I am judging from the retort and echo. It is very hilly here and the sound echoes loudly.

So, then I figured it must be some kind of a machine. Farmers scaring off something. Maybe hunting birds from lambs?

It is a very disturbing and loud sound. I sometimes am woken up by it. My thoughts on the matter is that the neighbours might have something to say to me if I decided to impose such a sound on them all. So, why should I have to listen to it?
So, Is it legal, this unpleasant repeating sound? If so, how long is it likely to continue for? Any advice?

I'd call your local council. They will get the noise assessed and take it from there. You could also go to the EPA. Just depends on where the noise is from. If a farm probably council. They will determine whether it's legal or not.

If your against hunting, at least you can be satisfied knowing it's a machine and not real shots being fired.

If say If you go to the farmer,he will probably tell you where to go with yourself

This is what you are hearing...can’t tell you the legality of using but I presume they are fine to use as i hear them a lot .
Are you living in town or country setting ? I would presume if you are living in country side you have heard this before.
Where I live a local farmer uses one and some days I can barely hear it but if it’s a still day it can sound fairly loud.

I live very remote and this is a new feature for me. Perhaps because there are so few people, no one got around to it before and this is some ones latest gadget. Thanks to all for advice, will consult a neighbour

They are allowed during the day not sure about after dark. If it's going constantly the birds will get used to it and it would have less of an effect anyway

I expect they should be turned off at night time. Tillage farmer near here used always use one but either out of courtesy or otherwise, turned it off at night. Not sure what you would be trying to scare at night anyway, unless deer from grassland...

IF using for the benefit of young lambs, it would still be left on at night.

The farmers around me use strobe lights at night and crow bangers during the day.

A farmer around here had one going day and night, it wasnt much fun for a couple living nearby trying to get a baby and young children to sleep.
Either he turned it off or it would be done for him. Why should anyone have to put up with that racket.

You mean to scare off foxes?

Probably unintended consequences on the farmers half. If he wanted to annoy you he'd cover the banger with a large grain bucket causing the level of noise to go from distant shotgun to nearby high calibre artillery piece. :)

Not saying this is the case here, but in many cases the annoyance suffered by non-farmers is brought upon themselves - many new arrivals start complaining about famers or hunters shooting foxes, and feed them in their garden. The farmers have to protect their flocks some way.

Bangers should not be used at night, I have 2 of them going for 6-8 weeks during the summer, timers fitted to both, not sure what the law is on this but I have no desire to keep myself and neighbours awake!
