Just got Vodafone TV installed and it is working great . Got a good deal with Vodafone and it looks like the time has come to get rid of Sky TV .

Anyone here able to outline the negatives if we cancel Sky .

We have been with Sky for 20 years , so reluctant to cancel until we absolutely certain that Vodafone is good enough .

One negative is if your broadband goes down you have no internet or tv.

If you have already got Vodafone Tv you must have signed a contract so you are hardly going to pay both of them

Our deal gives us VTV free for first 12 months and we pay 25e a month for final 6 months of contract .
12 months gives us loads of time to decide what to .

I don't know what channel lineup vodafone tv has but I'd imagine it is the usual package that companies offer here.

Will you have access to all bbcs and itvs as unlike a satellite box, with vodafone tv you will have no way of tuning in channels you don't receive in the basic package.

Have you signed a 12 or 18 month contract?

Don't do it, stick with Sky, it's honestly just not worth it! Also, if you haven't already, maybe you should contact Sky about an equipment upgrade, like a new box and stuff

We have lots of BBC , but I dont see any ITV's on it . Its an 18 month contract.

You can give up Sky subscription and still watch lots of satellite TV channels such as BBCs, ITVs, Channel 4, Channel 5 etc etc ...... all free to air and no subscription needed.
Add an aerial and you get the Saorview channels for free also.

The positive side of this is that there is no monthly subscription.
You can watch the channels on as many TVs as you wish.
Using the satellite for the channels you are not dependent on your broadband.

The negative side is that you lose access to Sky's own channels such as Sky Sport ... if you do not need those channels then this is not a negative.
You would also need to buy a suitable set top box.

Lots of us watch satellite TV without paying a subscription to any provider. ;)

Are you sure thats optional! Guarantee you its an 18 month contract anyway.

Anyway, the ATR content for racing is a bonus (til 1/1/19).

I've Eir for all three in Wex. And its a IP box setup like Vodafone. Only got the Tv part is that it was no different costs wise just a longer contract. Great in that Eir channel and BT channels all free.

Otherwise. I have a few boxes combining Saorview Channels & UK Satellite. What I have noticed is that the likes of Eir/Vodafone is missing a lot of ITV content!

Had Vodafone tv and broadband for a week. From my experience of internet service, it was not good. when the net dropped out, which it did lots and lots, tv goes too. Also told fallacies about channel line up, also the pause function etc is only available on about 3 channels. Main thing though was the unreliable internet service, both work from home regularly so can’t be without a connection. Got it out very quickly. Waited for two weeks for them to collect the hardware, ended up dropping it into a Vodafone shop and legging it before they could refuse to take it.

The pause function works on all channels. I've had it about 18 months and not once have I had a drop out on either the tv or broadband. However, you do need good broadband for everything to work well, I'm about 600m from a cabinet and have 90mb coming down the line to me.

Out of interest what channels have the 'play from the start' function?

Most channels have it, except the BBCs and CH4 channels. However, even on the channels that have it, some programming is excluded due to copyright reasons.

Do the Irish channels have it?

Just had a look now and yes they do, but again not all programmes. Some progammes say " playback not available due to content rights ". On all channels including BBC and CH4, you can rewind back to the point , you started watching that channel, even if that channel doesn't have the play from the start facility.

The latter would be standard though for any box. It is the rewind function.

I was interested about rte as they don't have 'watch programme from the start' yet on the saorview connect box.

So I wonder how vodafone are managing it. Is it run through their own server?

Must be run by Vodafone server I guess, right now, playback from beginning is available on RTE1, TV3, 3e,Comedy Central, Universal, Syfy, TLC, that's as far down the guide that I went. Notice it's not available on the programming right now on RTE2, TG4 and be3.

None of the sky channels are in HD on Vodafone. Dealbreaker for me.

Stick a Freesat box on the satellite cables. You get series link etc. on the Free To Air channels.

    https://www.freesat.co.uk/whats/full-channel-list/

But yeah +1 on the HD channels on other providers.

Have Vodafone TV few weeks now but unable to convert the family .
Back to using 2 remotes every time is annoying them .
Having to find the source every time is annoying them .

We also have Saorview , so when you press the 'plus' to change channels on TV remote , it automatically reverts back to Saorview which is annoying them .
The dark picture as you change channels is annoying them.

The reasons I use a combi-box and FTA TV even for TVs that have suitable tuners. ;)

Why are you using two remotes and Saorview ? For a start, everything on Saorview is on Vodafone and in HD and the Vodafone remote can be programmed to operate the TV, on/off, volume up/down etc. Am I missing something ? Apologies if I am.

Vodafone tell me that their remote will not work out tv. There is a power button on vodafone remote but it will not work tv.
2 remotes are necessary . vodafone box/remote turns up volume to 25 max and even at this the sound is not good enough so we have no choice but use tv remote as well .

I use and like Saorview especially for its sound and with Saorview I only need one remote.

Have you paired your vodafone remote to the tv?
Normally you have to do that for the remote to control the tv.

I’m a Vodafone BB customer and was offered a similar deal. Free tv for 6 Months, but 18 month contract.
Don’t think I’m going to go with it for a few reasons:
    1. Of 55 channels about 32 are free to air. The others aren’t really that good either.
    2. HD free to air channels are only in SD, like BBC.
    3. No Sky Atlantic for game of thrones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,892 ✭✭✭allthedoyles

I rang Sky the other day and we got a reduction from 39e monthly to 21e so we will keep Sky for the duration of contract and then decide whether to move to Vodafone full time or not.

Our main reason to stay with Sky is their user-friendliness .
No matter what you watching on tv, ie youtube , saorview , vodafone tv , you simply have to press the Sky on their remote and tv automatically reverts to Sky .

As I said before , with Vodafone you have to find the source , and also need the TV remote to control sound . This is not practical for elderly / non-tech householders .
