I’m waiting for my renewed licence to come by post. I have the receipt of going for it and I haven’t been driving the last few days whilst waiting. Someone told me there’s a 10 days grace period in which it would be still ok to drive. I’ve never been stopped and asked for my licence but afraid when I don’t have it I might ha. Can anyone say for sure if you can? I’ve tried to find out but getting no concrete answer.

If you ring the NDLS, what they'll tell is that strictly speaking, every driver is obliged to carry a full licence with them at all times. They will also tell you that it is down to the discretion of any garda that may stop you and ask for your licence.

You [presumably) have full licence "entitlements" which is not the same as driving "without a licence" which really means you are driving without the entitlement to drive. Even if you were driving while waiting for a learner permit, you would still have the entitlement to driver. You will have a receipt you can present to a garda who may stop you which is no load to carry.

You have to ask yourself how many drivers are in your situation this week? Last week? Next week and next month? The point is I'm sure the guards are willing to use common sense in these cases. Personally, I've never seen any evidence of the guards persecuting otherwise law abiding drivers who are without a physical licence for any number of reasons.

If you have had a full licence and you are awaiting it to be reissued then I cannot believe that any judge would look kindly on you being brought to court. If the state wishes to insist on no more than 10-14 days for a “producer” then it must be in a position to issue renewals in that period.

    Licence or learner permit?

If it’s actually gone out of date, then no.
