Suresanders battery thread

Just came across this thread. Don't know much about cars. So the van would struggle to start most mornings and wouldn't start at all on the very cold ones. I would have to leave it connected to another van for 5 mins with jump leads to get it going. After that I have a 20 min journey and it would start again no problem 4 hours later. Another 20 mins driving and start again no problem late in the evening. It has never died on me mid journey.

I'm after putting in a new battery today. Should I be getting someone to look at the alternator. The battery in it was only 3 years old and the same battery was €105 so I presume it was a decent one

No your probably good...if you’ve s multimeter stock it across the battery whilst engine is running... should be up over 14volts whilst charging a good batter.

My 159 suffered from parasitic battery drain; alternator works great, 14.5v when car is running, but leave it a week or two unused and the battery would be dead as doornails. A decent journey or trickle charge will sort it. A multimeter can test where this is too; set it to Amps, put terminals across the battery terminals with car off. If it shows a significant draw (1 amp or more), pull out fuses one at a time, replacing them, until current draw drops. I located mine this way, then that circuit needs to be looked into.

Yeah I checked mine. It's charging fine. Still struggles a bit to start but I haven't gave it a long run yet. The glow plugs have been done recently. The mechanic says to get a long run in and then he will check if anything is draining it after that. Heading to kerry from mayo at the weekend so I will see after that.
