Has the RTÉ Player been updated, will it accept Chromecast

Has RTÉ Updated the RTÉ Player?

I live in Armagh in an area which struggles to get any kind of an RTÉ signal. I can watch RTÉ International on my iPad using the RTÉ Player

However, I’d like to be able to watch it on my Sony television and I was wondering about Chromecast. After doing some Googling it appears that there was a plan to update the player before the end of 2017 but I couldn’t find any sites heralding the new Player. Does anyone know if an new version is available and will it now support Chromecast?

The objective is to mainly watch home based material which I know is on the Player. Chromecast, if available, would appear to be the simplest solution but if that’s not an immediate answer I would be glad to hear of other solutions

As always thanks for any suggestions

    Kevin

AFAIK the RTE Player iOS app has chromecast support but not the Android app. Why don't you update the app from the App Store and see if you can cast?

It is ridiculous if they enabled Chromecast for iOS and not Android. Imagine what would happen if the BBC did that?

I would also like Chromecast enabled for RTE Player. Same goes for TV3.

While I am always banging on about how fantastic the BBC iPlayer app is (and All4 for that matter), I don't think it is fair to compare with RTÉ Player considering the resources available.

Having said that, the RTE Player app strategy is very poor. No working app for Android TV / Fire TV, low quality streams, too many ads, unstable software (watch the ads again after the app crashed) and still no chromecast on Android. Considering the way we all watch TV nowadays, this app just drives me away from RTE in general.

Some lad made a brilliant Kodi RTE Player a couple of years back that included the ads and was geo-restricted. It was more stable than the official Android app at the time. He was sent a cease and desist letter from the RTE legal dept. You don't see the BBC doing that sort of thing. They know the uproar it would create. The kodi BBC iPlayer addons are pretty ok and work well enough but lack some of the excellent features on the official app.

I don't see why you would mention resources when the question of chromecast support is brought up. As already mentioned RTÉ Player for iOS has chromecast support while on Android it doesn't. What possible reason would RTÉ have to do this?

Yes, it's rather annoying. Maybe the people at Montrose only have iOS devices and as such, don't care what people outside Montrose want... wouldn't be like them now!

TG4 are the same. They are bringing the app out first on the iOS platform. Madness at this stage that they are not on android.

I presume lack of cash is the problem for both rte and tg4.

The bbc iplayer was hugley successful for the bbc over the Christmas period with people drawn to its various series and catch up etc.
