How do I get a p45? Very confused

Hi, I recently did one day of work, it was once off casual work and my first ever 'job' in Ireland. I'm Irish but have only ever worked abroad.

I am very unfamiliar with how the tax system works but I registered the employment on myAccount on Revenue.

Because this is my first ever job in Ireland I have no P45 and I'm wondering what happens. I will be paid at the end of this month for the one day of work but how do I get a P45 from this? Will I just automatically get one after being paid for my first employment in Ireland?

I'm sorry if my question doesn't make sense its just I am very confused about how the whole thing works and I would really appreciate any clarification.

Basically, when you start working with a company, that company goes to Revenue and "declares" you working for them. Or you can do it yourself, like you did.

When you stop working for that company, they issue you a P45 with your final payslip. You then give that P45 to any new employer you start working for in that calendar year. If you do not work again in that calendar year, you can use your P45 to reclaim back any tax you've paid.

Seems kind of odd that you would get paid through their payroll system for a single day of casual work, but if that's what they've told you then so be it.

if you have a job sit around all day , don't do any work, be late for work, take long tea breaks, you'll get your P45 on payday.

Thanks for your reply its very helpful.
Well it was a days work so I just registered it on myAccount on Revenue. So I should expect my p45 when I get payed later this month?

Did the company ever mention paying you through the books? Are they sending you on a payslip?

No they never did. I just got their revenue number and registered the employment.

If it was just one day of casual work most likely you are not on payroll.

Did you have to invoice them?

No I didn't. I'm not sure what to do now as I registered it with Revenue presuming that I needed to because it was work.

What do you need the p45 for?
When you next start employment just register the new employment as you have previously done. Ask the new employer to do the same so you don't get stung for emergency tax.

In your first post you described it as "once off casual work". Those words suggest to me that it's quite unlikely that your employer would have registered you as an employee so probably won't give you a P45.

Did you give your employer your PPSN or a tax credit certificate?
