As the title suggests, I fear I have bought a lemon.

I bought a used car from a dealer a little over two months ago and it has recently developed some serious problems. Would there be any chance I could get the dealer to take the car back?

I don't want to go into too much detail here as there is a possibility of this being read by the dealer.

Was there a warranty with this? If so go back to dealer, if not then you may be out of luck.

Describe the issue so those in the know can advise

There was a 3 month engine and gearbox warranty but the problem is not related to either. An attempt to repair was already done and half of the cost was covered by the dealer but it has either recurred or is worse than origninally thought, not sure yet.

Impossible to give any kind of definitive answer without knowing some more details (age & cost of car, type of fault, miles driven since fault developed, work carried out so far etc.). The only thing I could say is that any car sold must be fit for purpose, and if the fault was present at the time of sale you should be ok, if not, it's a bit of a grey area.

You have to give more info if you want anybody to be able to help you or advise. I understand you're cautious, but if that's the case then you'll have to seek private help.

The way your question is phrased, folk might as well answer
    • no, you'll be grand
    • haven't a leg to stand on, yer fooked
People can't even advise whether or not it's worth your while battling this (e.g. how much is the car worth? if it's 1 yr old and bought for €25k then your options and priorities are different than if it's 15 yrs old and bought for €800, even though the law is the same in each case the context and consequences are quite different)

Make, model, engine, year of car and the fault are needed to best advise here.

I'll see how things develop over the next day or two. Thanks.
