Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

J1 taxback

Currently trying to get my J1 taxback for 2017. At the moment it says I owe the US money which doesn’t seem right. I made under the $4050 exemption allowed but in filling out the 1040NR-EZ form, line 15 for the tax table amount shows up a number greater than the amount I had withheld. It means I owe more than I am owed which does not seem right. Just interested in anybody else’s experience of doing their own taxback?

Taxback.com are fairly experienced with U.S. tax refunds. Used them when I worked there for the last time on 2006.

Thanks for that. But they are going to take well over half of my tax refund so I am attempting to do it myself.

Half?I don't remember them taking that much off me. I thought the rate was 20% at most. Any more and it's not worth your while even asking them.

I remember being onto them. They were very vague about how much exactly I'd be due to get back and just kept giving me stuff to sign and scan loads of stuff. It was someone via email, who's English wasn't great... you might read something like 'this' instead of 'these'. It went on for months... probably would've been quicker but I never considered it a priority. I remember at one point being told that the quality of some papers I signed wasn't good enough to be sent to the tax office.

In the end they wanted me to pay them money before they gave me the check I was owe. It might have been €50. But the check I was owed ended up only being $16! I would've have always assumed they'd just take the commission from the check value first. This got me very nervous and I gave up on the whole thing.
