I am doing very low mileage in my current 2012 Focus 1.6 diesel. I have encountered a few problems with the engine and am looking around to change to a 1.1 petrol car which I think my suit my needs better in the long run. So far I've peeked at the Kia c'eed, Hyundai i30 and the Focus ecoboost petrol options.

I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on the best option or are there better cars in the class which I have haven't considered? Probably looking a 162 or 171 model depending on the value of my current car with just 30000 miles on the clock. I'm also unsure of its trade-in value on a new 181. Time to do the legwork I guess. Thanks

I have seen a few pages set up on facebook where owners are complaining of head gasket failure and coolant issues on the 1lt ecoboost engine that is in the Focus/Fiesta leading to engine replacements.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/FordEcoboostNightmare/ is one of the main pages. Worth a read.

Why limit yourself to a tiny engine if motor tax related to emissions? No harm with slightly bigger engine

Thanks for the help. I had issues with a larger diesel engine in the past and now again with the 1.6d. I put this down to my low mileage as a potential reason for the trouble. I guess moving to a smaller petrol engine might suit my needs better? Still no real idea on what are my best options. Probably come down to availability and offers.

Don’t limit yourself to 1.0 engines is the point. A lot of new cars have small capacity turbo engines, that’s the way it’s going. These are inherently more complicated than an old fashioned petrol engine.

The engine size had nothing to do with your problems, it was purely down to your low mileage. A bigger engine will be less stressed than a smaller engine especially if you do the odd longer journey so like said, don't limit yourself to small engines under the false belief they're more reliable than a bigger engine.

The Skoda Octavia 1.2 and the newer 1.0 litre are worth looking at too depending on what year you go for and your budget too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Thanks for this. Spotted a 161 1.2 petrol Octavia that might just fit the bill.

Thanks for the advice. Went for an Octavia with low mileage. Delighted with the change so far.
