Posting for a friend who is working in retail management for the past 15 years. She is looking to move to a more Monday- Friday role ideally in or around same salary. Has anyone successfully made the change and what job suggestions would you make?

I made the switch from retail management to civil service. I took a paycut as went in as a CO but it is possible to enter at higher levels

Yeah was going to say civil service could be a possibility, certainly 9-5. It gets quite a few career changers as the competencies required are mostly general ones that a person would pick up in most other career paths and could transfer across. Keep an eye on PAS for possible opportunities.

Joined the civil serivce as a CO myself after a long time in retail and have recently been appointed HEO. Expereince from my years in retail worked in my favour going for promotion so definitely a route i would recommend, once your friend is willing to take an initial pay cut. I had tried other avenues outside of the public sector to get out of retail but always found it difficult to get a foot in the door, something which is not an issue with open competitions within the civil service.

I was recently made EO and my retail experience was so easy to apply to competencies! Fingers crossed it helps me get heo or ap in the next few years

Definitely will. Interview board just want to see that you understand the competencies and can demonstrate their use. I would recommend getting involved in projects wherever possible within your current role. I was given the opportunity to work on some projects which provided some valuable experience.
