I'm going for a week to Sicily this Easter for a week. I have been before but this time I'm flying into Catania went to Palermo and enjoyed it last time. Is Catania worth visiting or would I be better getting a train or bus somewhere else straight or should spend a night or two in Catania and then go on.

Secondly where else should go I like somewhere nice and not too touristy with a bit of life somewhere that's not too mad busy but not dead either. I'm thinking Syracuse as I hear its nice but I'm open to other suggestions anyone been there before what's it like?

Moto, Modica, Naxos Gardin, letojanni and Taormina are all worth a visit / stay.

We spent a few nights in Catania last year - interesting place to stroll around, we went to the opera house one night. We then went to Taormina which sounds the opposite of what you want as it's very very touristy - we still loved it though.

I might go there for a day trip. I'm sure it's still nice despite the tourists. Also I'm thinking of renting a car but would prefer to go by public transport are the buses/trains reliable around Catania to the likes of Syracuse, Modica and Taormina.

We got a bus from Catania to Taormina, was grand. The bus station is in a slightly run-down part of town, I wouldn't walk there at night-time. Also a bit odd in that you buy tickets a block or two away from where the bus leaves from. But the bus itself was fine.

We stayed in Catania for a few days last year, but mostly used it as a base to visit other areas (Taormina, Syracuse and a tour to Etna). It seemed ideally located as it was mid-way between the other 3 places and our time was limited. The bus between Taormina and Syracuse was fine. We found it a bit confusing to find where to buy the tickets though and the area felt kind of dodgy.

Catania was ok, but the other places were much nicer. There were some areas of Catania that we didn't feel very safe. However it was an ideal base for our other trips and accommodation is much more affordable there because it's less touristy.
