Going uphill to approach a roundabout

When I go up hill to approach a certain roundabout I gear down from 4th gear to 2nd but when I do the car loses power/momentum before getting to the top of the hill (the entrance to the roundabout). Am I gearing down too early or taking my foot off the clutch too fast?

You could be gearing down too soon. It's just something you'll need to get used to. You should look up videos about "matching revs". Also look over the cars manual, if they have a section on gearing, look over what speeds it considers acceptable cor the gears.

    Hi,

Why not forget about approaching, negotiating roundabouts for a moment.

Practice slowing down, changing gears on a similar gradient first. Find a suitable nice long hill. Pick a reference point few hundred meters ahead, tell yourself that is the entrance to a roundabout. Then have your speed and gears correct about a half car length back from that point.

    Repeat.

There are far too many variables to say what you are doing wrong. But one, it could be that subconsciously you are feeling nervous entering the roundabout so you do not give sufficient gas.

If steep hill, and depending on your speed may only be necessary to come off the gas, car momentum immediately drops to 2nd gear speed, change gear, then back on the gas.

What you are doing sounds potentially dangerous. Approaching a roundabout and traffic without being in full control of the car.
