Didn't get job - but invited to interview for another role

I've just gone through a fairly long interview process for a role and after getting to the final phase where I felt I did pretty well, I was today told that I didn't get the job unfortunately this time.

However in the same rejection email, the manager who interviewed me, cc'd one of her colleagues in another department and mentioned that her colleague has an opening that I may be interested in and I should drop her an email as she has passed my details, CV and previous application form on.

I've now been scheduled for an interview on Monday for the role - which is similar in some ways to the role I applied for but maybe a little bit of a better fit for me and the hours are better but the pay is pretty much the same.

Question is, should I read too much into being invited back - perhaps it is just out of common courtesy, or should I read it that they were impressed with me and I should aim to give a very similar interview to what I have just got?

I doubt it is out of common courtesy. They maybe felt another candidate was more suited to the role but that you would be an asset to the company in another role.

TBH I reckon that you are an absolute shoooo-in for the role the are putting you forward for. I have a background in recruitment.

I applied for a job last November and went through the same long process. I received an email to say I didn't get the role I interviewed for however they had me in mind for another position and to consider putting myself forward for, which I did and a week later I was offered and accepted this position.
I'm almost two months in the role and glad now that it turned out the way it did. The hiring manager later told me that he knew when he was speaking to me that I would be more suited to the other role that had not been advertised at that stage, the pay was better too. You have nothing to lose by going to this interview. Best of luck I hope it works out for you

I was on the other side of the table employing people, a couple of times someone would come up for a role who would have been wasted at it and more suited to a different position.

The law has it you have to turn them down for the role and offer the other role afterwards which seems to be the case here.

I would take it as a major positive. They most certainly want you. A budget could have changed or a new project etc turn up

Go for it and the best of luck

Happened to my husband went for an interview didn’t get it got a call a month or so later that a role had come up they thought he might be suitable for. He went for interview without getting his hopes up too much and was told at the end of the interview he got the job. Good luck OP.

Had the same thing happen me twice and got the other job both times, so I'd say you probably have a fairly good chance. I guess it must mean for me that I'm bad at reading job descriptions or something..

I had the interview for the role today and I have to say that it was a pretty tough interview - based on what was said on here I'd have expected something a little bit easier but I was grilled for about 90 minutes by three interviewers.

I asked them at the end of the interview what the process was and they're still interviewing until the end of the week apparently, so I'm not as confident as I was before I went into the interview!

Guess we'll wait and see how it goes - this one involves traveling within the local area to other offices as well but they were pretty vague on how that is going to be paid - so we'll see I guess.
