VAG dieselgate - any issues post fix?

I've (2011 Audi A5 2.0TDI owner) been holding off on getting the fix for Diesel Gate on grounds that it will reduce the efficiency of the engine and change the performance of the car. I've been called for another recall that's actually a fire risk with the auxilliary heater. It seems like I'll have to take that fix. Can I opt out of the software update? Should I?

What you could do is get a mechanic to download the current software that is on your ECU . If Audi update the software and your car is not running as good as it was before the new software update.

Get your mechanic to put back on your original software .

I watched the Netflix show Dirty Money on this recently and was wondering how this was resolved here. By all accounts, these engines are throwing out huge amounts of pollution and were simply taken off the road in the states for that reason.

Has the Irish govt. done anything as aggressive here?

Reinstating a "cheating" ECU profile after a fix goes through is hardly very civic minded either to be fair.

That is true - as its a 2011 car it must have passed the NCT test , so it can't be that bad in its current setup .

Diesel emissions are not measured during the NCT.

My experience as very unhappy VW Golf owner would say don't do the fix. Car was fine pre-fix. Since the fix it is sluggish, and is doing active DPF regeneration once a week despite two very long motorway drives on average a week. Injector blew about 6 months ago and was replaced under the so-called trust building measures. No reason to apply the update - I definitely wouldn't have in hindsight. There's an active-enough facebook group of unhappy VW customers in the UK, maybe have a look at it before deciding.

As I understand it, the whole scandal related to the cars knowing when they were in test conditions and activating a different "profile" to make it through emissions testing.

Honestly not trying to appear as the moral police here but.... if the cars without the fix are spewing out huge amounts of pollution do you not feel obligated to get it sorted or hand the car back to VW if that's an option?

I'm not coming into this in a holier than thou mode, honestly!

Currently driving a completely uneconomical 3.0 petrol "gas guzzler" but these VAG cars were specifically engineered to bypass emissions regulations to a huge extent.

There's no option to hand the car back and no compensation for changed performance (as I understand because it's all in line with the frankly bogus manufacturers published MPG etc figures).

What a dose. Have resale values been hit or is everyone still only looking at the "chape tax"?! :D

I'm not yet in that mindset of selling (maybe one should always be in that mindset), but I can't see how they wouldn't be affected.

VW won't do anything for you so no point trying to hand back.

NCT does not measure NOx as far as I am aware. It was more specific to the USA.

What is involved in the heater repair? Removing the dash and so on?

We actually have a megathread for this, it's nice to keep all things Dieselgate in one place.
