Sony Xperia X charging problems

    Hi all,

My Sony Xperia X mobile ran down to the point it turned itself off. Now I am unable to charge it every time i try. Sometimes it will show the zero battery picture , sometimes it wont.

I have left it on charge overnight on the mains a few times and sometimes in the morning i can actually get it to charge to 100% until it says Charged.

When it was working i downloaded the Ampere app and on charging on a 2.1 amp mains charger the charge took about 5 hours. Sometimes it connects and charges at a reasonable quick rate, sometimes it connects and starts charges but after a few moments it stops or either cycles connecting and disconnecting.

I used a variety of charging points - mains, laptop usb and from a 2.4 amp Juice Power pack. On the Juice power pack the lights on the power pack go off after 20 secs or so when they should stay on if its charging.

Any tips advice etc gratefully accepted

    cheers all

You've also tried multiple cables? Connecting and disconnecting sounds more like a cable or USB port issue.

Tried multiple cables and chargers and all of which work on another mobile. Some cable/charger combos which i have written off for use with my mobile, sometimes work as if nothing is wrong...sometimes they will not.

Re the usb port, looking now as you mention it, it does look as if its been pushed in to the mobile. I think there is a bit of flexy ribbon wire connection to the motherboard, is it likely that the flexy ribbon has been crumpled?

Would be hard to say without seeing it. Sometimes it can be something as simple as having some kind of debri stuck in the port.

bit of an update; got a needle and poked out a tiny amount of fuzz from the charging socket and a tiny grain of dirt from above and belw the plastic "divider".

Put it on charge for a couple of times to the Juice power pack 2.4 amp socket until the lights went off (should really stay on if charging), lights go off after about 30 seconds. Then connected mobile to the mains, got the Zero battery icon but red charging light so good. Left it on for a hour or two, light went orange but didnt look at charge percentage incase i disconnected charging. Went to bed a couple of hours later with still orange light with 44% charge. Woke up this morning to see the light was off and charge was now only 18%. It didnt seem to want to charge turned off so as it had enough juice to turn on i tried charging turned on. Been on charging now about 3 hours, wifi, notifications on, screen off after a few minutes, and is now 64% charged.

I have been to this same position a few times, im nervous about overcharging it , when it gets to 100% it says Charged - but is it really fully charged ? I have the Ampere app which shows the voltage level of the battery but i dont know what the level should be to know if its still underpowered even when the battery icon shows fully charged. Is there any danger in leaving it on well beyond the point it says 100% ?

I have proven it can take a charge so the usb socket is working. I have had connecion problems in the past trying connection to Xperia Companion and connection for charging from the laptop usb socket. I shall try when it shows 100% charged. Do you think it could be a software problem? My Theme / wallpaper suddenly changed a few days ago. I do not have an uptodate backup of the mobile and do not want to Reset my mobile to Factory Settings before i get the data from the old mobile to be safely on my new mobile.Sony is to release Android Oreo soon - am i best to wait for an ota update to repair any possible software problem? If i decide to use Xperia transfer app to copy the data to my new mobile, will i be carrying across all the battery charging problems etc too?

Any advice, tips etc welcome, Cheers all

May 2016 device, could the battery have degraded over that time? If you have it that long?

What does ampere report for the health of the battery?
Edit: - Doesn't report the health of a battery correctly, tested on my old Z1 which has a useless battery.

If the port is malfunctioning it can be replaced: -

If the battery is the problem that also can be replaced: -

Looks complicated, and similar procedure for both, if your opening the device you might as well replace both. Also if uncomfortable doing it maybe get a repair shop to do it.

If i decide to use Xperia transfer app to copy the data to my new mobile, will i be carrying across all the battery charging problems etc too?

Very unlikely you could transfer battery problems by software backup of apps and data.

Cheers for the videos, i think it may be a shop repair or at least i think i will probably end up carrying bits of the mobile there for rebuilding.

I now have a fully charged mobile. It is now charging via usb from the laptop, but from 98% to 100% and is being showing the charging light every time i plug it in. I dont know if it would charge from 0% by laptop usb.

I still cannot get the laptop to recognise it for Xperia Companion. I may be using just a charging lead, i dont know how to know just by looking. I am investing in a Sony charge and transfer cable so i will definitely know.

Re Ampere app measurements - for information - Full charge = 100%, temperature is 21.2 Celsius, voltage was 4.272v and battery health was Good. A previous Ampere readings was Charge = 38%, Temperature was 38 Celsius and voltage was 3.713v.

    Cheers

What does the device show up as in windows device manager? Maybe check drivers.

Are you able to transfer files, using windows file manager? If you can it is a data cable and not just a charge cable.

The cable which works best for laptop charging is not allowing the mobile to show up in Device manager at all. However, im sure that the same cable did bring up a MTP / Charge Only message on the mobile screen - but i cannot get to that stage now.

When in Xperia Companion and trying to connect the mobile , nothing is detected. The cable is probably a charge only cable. I shall try on another laptop and see what happens. (perhaps my usb sockets are worn?) however my new Xperia ZX Premium is seen by Xperia Companion. Shall do more tests.

Sounds like the port on the phone is damaged!
