    Hi there,
I've had a generic satellite box connected to the dish for 10 years and receive all the free channels no problem.
I've seen that the newer Sky+ box allows you to pause and record.
If I got a second-hand Sky+ box would this pause function work since I don't subscribe to Sky?
Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

Recording and pausing live tv will not work once subscription is cancelled. I'd recommend looking at Humax Freesat boxes for this functionality, lots of reviews on Youtube.

    No.
The Sky boxes are crippled when used without a subscription.

There are lots of reasonably priced STBs available which will have all the functions you require, as can be seen from the number of threads in this forum section.

You would be much better served with one of those ..... even a used one!
