Irish in primary teaching courses?

Hi everyone (I hope this is in the right place, sorry if it’s not,I already posted it in the pre-school and primary section but then discovered this section which is probably the better one to put it in!)

I’m currently in 6th year and am hoping to do primary teaching next year.

However,I am finding higher level Irish really hard and to be honest, dread the thought of doing Irish whilst doing a primary teaching degree so I was just wondering what type of Irish is in the degrees?

I know you have to go to the Gaeltacht twice but I’m wondering is the Irish you’d be doing on the course itself hard stuff like the poetry and prose at Leaving Cert or is it more like the basics of Irish like you would actually be teaching at primary age?

I have no problem with doing the basics but don’t fancy the idea of doing more advanced stuff!

    Thanks in advance!

Obviously if you decide to take up an elective in 'Arts' Irish you'll have poetry and stories and what not but with regards to the actual base course no there's none of that. Only people who did the Gaeilge elective in my year were absolute wizards at the language anyway.

There's not a massive amount of Irish in the four years really, more so significant in the first two years. There was a lot more work involved with English and Maths than Irish I felt.

You do two aspects. The language content itself consists of mostly grammar and is done in much more thorough detail than Leaving Cert which is hard enough going I'll admit but nothing too bad. It's worthwhile though and much more meaningful than just chanting off a story about Liam agus Pól having the craic at the concert with Máire and Áine.

The other side is "Múineadh na Gaeilge" which is all about actually teaching the language to children so focuses a lot more on teaching methodologies and teaching plans in general. That's actually grand and something you can take from the lecture and implement straight away in the classroom.

I certainly wouldn't put off the course just for finding Irish tough. Although you need Irish to get into the course and to teach in the country, it's only one subject in the curriculum and one aspect of the course.

Best of luck with the LC.

Thank you so much for that, that’s really helpful!

I definitely wouldn’t be opting to do an Irish arts elective so at least I wouldn’t have to do any more poetry etc and don’t mind the grammar side of things and teaching sides of things as much.

Thank you-I’ve just finished my mocks today so am definitely more aware of the pressure of the actual leaving now so will need every bit of luck I can get!
